| I've never done them either, but I did pilates in gym class once. It takes more energy, and yoga is just stretching and it's supposed to be relaxing. I think if you want more of a workout, try pilates but if you want it to be relaxing try yoga. Also, I think there's a new thing called "yogalates" which is yoga + pilates combined. |

| I do both yoga and pilates. Personally I like yoga much more and it doesnt matter if you are flexible or not. On my yoga video it said "saying you are too stiff to do yoga is like saying you are too dirty to take a shower." It is very relaxing and allows me to focus. You also get flexible very fast and feel very energized afterwards instead of exhausted. Pilates is good too though and works your core. I just find yoga more relaxing and fun to do. |

I've taken yoga classes and I am incredibly NOT flexible, but the teachers always give different "levels" (at least, a good teacher should) of a stretch depending on how flexible you are.
Yoga is very relaxing-hatha yoga is the best for beginners because it focuses on stretching and relaxation. If you want more meditation, kundalini yoga is good (but it can get boring). Bikram's yoga is one of the more intense ones-they heat the room up high (it's supposed to warm up your body and let you go deeper into the poses) but it's NOT for beginners because that warming up of your muscles can make you think you're more flexible than you are. Plus a friend of mine went and she said she got sick after the class because of the heat during the workout :S
Pilates is a better workout-I think there's more of an emphasis on light cardio and toning than yoga which is more about endurance, strength, and flexibility.
Most yoga/pilates schools will let you do a drop in class to see if you like it, so it's a good way to find out if you like it or not. You can also rent exercise videos from the library for free or the video store and give them a try. |

I take yoga classes and really enjoy it. (Beginner hatha yoga). Yoga focuses more on breathing and relaxation then pilates does, pilates takes more energy and is a lot more of a workout. However yoga makes me feel a lot more supple and flexible, and not as sore.
I have never taken pilates but I am going to soon.
So it depends on what you want, however for my purposes I would take yoga then take pilates |

I don't think it matters too much which one you pick ,so long as you're not relying upon it as your sole means of exercise.
i haven't done pilates regularly ( I did it once in gym) but i do yoga regularly. The thing is, some yoga is more strenuous but its more about feeling more vigourous and relaxed, which is good because sometimes after working out you never fully stretch your body (you do the major muscles but theres still parts that don't get stretched) whereas pilates is like doing weights (kind of..but for your core), where its strength training.
the great thing about yoga is that the first time you do it, you're so sore after you reall feel where you've "worked out." I know it's weird, but i never feel like i've really worked out unless i feel a bit sore the next day. And after you do yoga regularly, you don't feel sore afterwards, but once you miss three classes or so, you go back and you realise how important it is to keep up your flexibility. |

Yes, pilates is more of a workout but yoga is more relaxed. Depending on which kind of yoga you are taking, you can sometimes get a pilates workout in a yoga session. _________________

i know this is like, three months late, but generally speaking, pilates is a more muscle-building exercise, whereas yoga focuses more on flexibility and posture, etc. etc.
and this is kinda off-topic, but not really...anyways, i was reading the us weekly yesterday and hilary duff slimmed down through pilates...so if that's what you're looking for (muscle toning) then i would say that's probably your best bet. |

I've done both and it depends which kind of a workout you're looking for, because yoga is very relaxing and helps get you flexible and such, but pilates really works your core and helps for abs and that kinda stuff..... I wanna try yogalates! _________________

| About Bikram's yoga, I think it is possible for beginners in yoga to do it. I started without any experience in yoga, and found the first class really intense and tiring. However, it really makes all your muscles work out, and the sweat can really be detoxifying. It can be both fun and exhausting. The first class at the yoga studio I go to is free, so you should all give it a try! |

^ One of my best guy friends is like, obsessed with Bikrams yoga - he goes at least twice a week these days and has been trying to get me to go with him this whole summer! I've always wanted to, but I've been scared that it's too hardcore for me, haha, but I think I'm gonna try it out |

So i finally started a class, i chose to do pilates for now i was talking with my moms friend and she helped me realise that i would like more of an active workout instead of doing yoga where its more relaxation and breathing because id like to tone my muscles more than anything and become a little stronger. I would like to do some yoga later on though. _________________

I just started having yoga sessions in September. Wow, the first time you're so amazed because of how relaxed you feel. You definitely will be sore in quite a few places after some sessions. I found that yoga increased my flexibility, and it also challenges your muscles as well because some poses require some strength. Like the last class was very tiring, but I LOVE yoga =) _________________ < fashion 3 |

^hey, are you going into yoga to lose weight or just going for fun or some other reason? because if you are doing yoga to lose weight, could you tell me after a while if yoga helps with weight loss? im planning on either joining kickboxing or yoga next year but i cant decide which one will be better. _________________ used to be 'sw33tlilhugz' on the old f18.
