I was in the mall yesterday and I overheard this girl telling her friends that she wonders why if girls can wear girl and guy clothes... then why can't guys wear girl clothes without getting weird looks... and that got me thinking.
What do you guys think? Should it be okay for guys to wear girls clothes and not get weird looks? |

I think they can wear girl tee-shirts and things. Like last week on Beauty and the Geek the guys got makeovers and one of the guys ended up wearing a girls tee-shirt because it fit slimmer, it looked pretty hot (depsite the fact that the graphic was like, colourful fish, lol). So that and like zip-up hoodies maybe. But I don't like it when guys wear pants tighter than mine. That's just not right. I like slim pants on guys, yeah, but nothing that's painted on!! _________________

^ I agree, I'm fine with everything else but for some reason it's hard for me to accept tight pants on guys.
I guess because with girls, when we wear tight pants, sometimes if they are a little TOO tight they show off a little more than the general public wants to see, but generally it's not .. vulgar. But for guys, their private parts [that not everybody wants to know about] are down there, so tight pants mean that they show off a LOT more than what girls show off when they wear the same pants.
So to me, it's just .. I don't want to know what you look like down there .. and when you wear tight pants, I get an idea and it makes me want to wash my eyes with soap. Dishwashing soap. |

I have to agree about the "painted-on" pants. Guys just don't look good in those, let's me see way more than I want to see, and it doesn't really fit their form. But like... fitted bootcut styles I'm fine with seeing. At least their pants aren't hanging half-way or past their butt. To me, that just looks damn ugly. I'm also not a fan of seeing the extra-baggy stuff. Fitted please. Fitted everything, if possible.
Lots of guys already wear girl tshirts and jeans. But what about skirts (and I'm not talking about kilts), girl camis (because there *are* boy camis), lacy clothes, and other things that are obviously feminine? I'd be fine with it as long as it suits their shape, and the style that they're trying to go for. If a guy feels like wearing a pair of jeans with a few layers of beaters and a cardigan and he still looks good, then I'm fine with that.
It's only fair. |

I have no problem with guy wearing girl's clothing. I was shopping with one of my male friends on Friday night and he was looking for a pair of gray skinny jeans. He couldn't find any in stores that sell men's clothing so we had to turn to women's stores.
I must say, it was pretty funny. A salesperson would ask us what we were looking for, he would state his desires, and she would ask me what my size was. When he said it was him, they would kind of assume he was gay and start talking to him in a more effeminate fashion.
I would, however, advise that guys adhere to underwear designed for them. I know that my g-strings and panties were not designed to contain testosterone filled scrotums. I can see a lot of chafing occuring. |

LOL
I'm relatively okay with guys wearing girls' clothing. I don't think I can handle a guy in lacy tanks, flowery lace scarves, miniskirts or anything like that BUT if a guy can pull off skinny jeans and a tight-fitting shirt, I say go for it. I'd rather a guy dress effeminately instead of "grungily" (not a word, I know ). _________________

I wouldn't wear women's clothes simply because it'd look terrible on me. I've got a somewhat muscular build and broad shoulders, so any feminine shapes would be awful. I've seen guys wear Lululemon and Juicy in the past, and they pulled it off looking fine, so I'm not against it. Women have borrowed from men's fashion for decades, so men should be able to do the same! _________________

I don't think there's anything wrong with guys wearing girls' clothing. If it's what they want to wear, and suits them, then why not? I don't understand the whole underwear bit though.. I could see that being very uncomfortable due to the lack of underwear and excess maleness. _________________

^ ditto on the underwear you made me laugh!
Guys should definitely be able to wear girls clothes, but they have to wear it right. I saw this guy that was like 6f5 and really skinny. He was wearing really tight girl jeans but the back slid down all the way to the bottom of his butt. He was wearing huge black underwear that went really high and his shirt was sort of short, like to his belly button. It did not look good. At all. It made him look like a stick man. |

^^What *exactly* do you mean by "excess maleness"?
I ask because if it's what I think you mean, then I'd have to say that I don't think it'd apply to all guys; everyone's built differently. I mean, there are even guy styles now that have "girlish" cuts... the only difference being the material being used. If a guy is built in a certain way that he is able to wear girl's undies without the "chafing factor", then there's not much of a problem, is there?
^Yeah. Definitely sounds like the guy *should not* be wearing those clothes. |

| Umm... I don't like it. And girls' clothes aren't meant to fit guys well, lol. I don't want to sound too old-fashioned and all but really, guys should just wear guys' clothes. Not only does it look and supposed to fit better, but it's just more... appropriate. |

^ i know that isnt directed towards me, but skinnys that ride half way down their legs. tight little girl shirts and tna sweaters.
i'll relate back to some other ideas you all said. if it fits properly and if its not to "girly," like lacey tops etc. then fine. but honestly i have a fine line of what girl's clothes guy's wear that'll be okay. |

^Argh. At my school, all the scene and emo guys wear girls' skinnys and TNA zippys. Alot of girls actually thought they made guy TNA now. I don't think they do... so yeah. It's really annoying, actually. _________________

I think it's pretty nasty actually. Well.. It looks good on some guys; the skinny jeans and such. But I'd rather a guy be wearing baggy normal jeans hha. Girls clothes (most of them anyways) are made to fit a tad snugger.. and guys in snug clothes just doesn't look right, and they have a little more in the pants and most of us don't really want to see any nads. But like I said.. it just looks good on some guys. _________________ aka;

That's totally what I've thought of! I was like, "Women's wear is alot inspired by menswear, and we'll be open about it. But a guy will shirk away from ever being called 'girly' or have their clothes resemble a woman's." It's kind of guys holding on their "Masculine Macho" gender role, but then women getting liberated and getting to become more free as to how they want to appear. Like there are tomboys, but why not any "tomgirls" without people going like, "Eww!" or "Is he like experiencing a sexual identity crisis?" Like there's none of that with tomboys.
Do men unconsciously say that women becoming more like a guy is (up to an extent) okay, but a guy becoming like a girl is making yourself worse? Sexism!
I agree with fashion_boy here:
| fashion_boy wrote: | Women have borrowed from men's fashion for decades, so men should be able to do the same! |
But also, I don't see why men are restricted to wearing tuxes and suits to formal events, but women can have all these colours and cuts of dresses. Women have this overly free sexuality when it comes to clothes, but men are all Uniform! Robot! Sameness! Seriousness! that bothers me.
And I don't like the term metrosexual because it implies that caring about fashion has something to do with your sexuality. It doesn't!
Straight guys can perfectly well be fashionable. We need to open that up for guys too. Feminism (like when getting equal in terms of fashion) isn't right when men get left behind
that was rant. sorry _________________

Hey, if you can pull it off and still look like a guy/girl, go for it!
Other than that, it's kinda creepy. There's a lesbian at my school who forever, me and my friends tried to figure out if she was a he or she. Finally found out she had a girls name. But she's a total guy, walks/talks/looks like a guy.
I wear guys shorts when I'm out running. Nike ones. I don't care. I don't like the girls one. _________________

^HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAH
That seems to be the biggest question by most of the posters in this thread.
I have a number of guy friends who wear girls'/women's clothes - not for the "style" or whatever, but simply because they don't feel like guys (hence my extensive knowledge of the following). For reference if some of you don't understand what I mean, I refer you to the Ugly Betty thread: http://fashion18.forumwise.com/fashion18-thread285.html .
Fitting "manparts" in pants? It's not hard. Just tuck the dangly down-and-backwards and wear really tight-fitting panties. No chafing or whatever at all. |

I know this topic is dead, but I saw a link to it in another one so decided to revive it.
I would say that the people who have the biggest problem with guys wearing girls clothes are the guys itself...not all guys, of course, but the ones who are always trying to overcompensate their butchness.
I think as far as men wearing womens clothes, it's ok as long as they follow the same rules as women do. I mean, you wouldn't want to see a 300 pound lady wearing lululemons, would you? It's the same with men...once I was at a busstop and saw a man with pants so tight they were showing off something I did not want to see (isn't that bad for them anyway?)
But as long as the clothes are rated pg (for both genders), there's really nothing wrong with a guy wearing a lacy tanktop or skinny jeans, is there?
I personally would probably not date someone who dressed overfemininely (call me shallow, but I'm being honest) but at that same token, I wouldn't date someone who dressed overly emo, gangsta, preppy, etc. (Yes, I am picky to the point of being anal. But isn't everyone?)
Girls are lucky because they have more freedom and creativity in their clothes....they can wear any colour, cut, style, without getting ridiculed for it (even wearing guy clothes is considered "sexy.")
I think the reason why alot of people prefer guys to wear guys clothes is, baised on how society raised us, guys clothes look better because they flatter a more masculine build. However, if someone was slender enough to pull off tighter clothes, then who am I to stop them? It's like what I said above, flatter your body type, not your gender/what's trendy.
Ramble ramble ramble.
And the people who are still not totally comfortable with it yet probably just aren't used to it. Think about it, when our parents (or grandparents) were little kids, women could rarely get away with wearing pants to school, and now it's the norm.
The times, they do be a changing.[/u] _________________ www.primmagazine.com |

Oh and, while we're on this topic:
I have soon-to-be step cousins (their mom is engaged to my uncle) who are a boy named Taylor and a girl named Quinn.
Two of my best friends who dated for almost two years were a girl named Taylor and a boy named Quinn.
Yeah, it was confusing. _________________ www.primmagazine.com |
