Hey guys,

So recently, the TDSB had a vote to decide whether they should open an Afrocentric schools that focuses its curriculum more on African history, culture etc. The vote was 11-9 in favour, and there's been a lot of controversy in this issue...

I just wanted to know what you guys thought about this? We were discussing this in civics today and I thought it was a pretty interesting topic.

We talked a bit about this in Socials today...
my teacher said that this would be like a private school only for black people (hope i'm not offending anyone. :/) to attend because their community said that "too many black teens are killing each other and dropping out of school".
personally, I feel that it's unneccessary to start an Afrocentric school. It's not fair that they stereotype African-Americans because not all of them are that way. In fact, many of the people starting violence and dropping out of school are probably of all different races. If they start this school, do they really think that it's going to change the African-American teens' minds on what and what not to do? It's not like a single school will stop violence or anything. But that's just my opinion.
I would love to hear some other peoples' opinions as well.

To me it seems like discrimination twisted around in the form of a "lighter" term. Like ^ said, its not fair to target a single race and call it "violent" when other ethnicities are just as capable of doing the same kind of thing.

I don't like the idea of it, either.
Do we have anyone on the boards of that kind of ancestry? It'd be interesting to hear their opinions.

All they're doing is re-segregating a community. If they really want the discrimination to end, they need to incorporate black history into the REGULAR school curriculum so that all students, regardless of race, learn about it and are more informed. They also need to set up more support for black students in schools (like at my high school they had services for first nations students-like extra guidance and support). Separating black students is only going to make the issues deeper because people aren't exposed to other cultures-and how are they supposed to learn to accept people that way?
The whole thing is like taking a step back.....

i dont like the idea either. i think its segregated black and white students from each other. and what if other cultures start saying why arent there asian/middle east etc.. schools either?
i know that my school is going to have a black peoples history course in 09/10 as a social science course.

*eye roll* yes it's a great idea to separate the ethnicities just when the going gets tough. yeah it's so easy to give up on getting along and finding solutions because these ethnic diversity schools will lead to a more racial tolerant future.

btw that was sarcasm. xDDD it's harder to do online. rolol.

but honestly, how is that going to solve anything? we're just driving them apart more! the future is supposed to be one free of racism. that is a common goal (or should be) for mankind! especially when canada is known as a multicultural nation...!

Sounds like a step backwards, imo.

I just searched about it and here's what I came up with (I bolded the key points):
Quote:
According to the TDSB, there’s a 40 per cent drop-out rate among students of African heritage. The board is spending $820,000 to fund an Afro-centric school slated to open in September, 2009; to launch a pilot program of African history and culture in three existing schools; to establish a research centre at York University to determine the best way to improve the success of marginalized students; and to devise a strategy to combat underachievement for all marginalized students in Toronto.

Xavier Gordon, president of the Canada zone chair of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE), opened the debate by saying, “It’s strange to see that some blacks are fighting to separate again, now that we have access to all the opportunities that others have. The Toronto school board is accountable to everybody, not just the African community.”

Sheila Emijjo, president of the Caribbean African Student Association countered that, saying, “This is not an issue of segregation. An Afro-centric school could address the high drop-out rate and try to keep kids in school.”

...

“Numerous studies show blacks are behind whites because they do not connect with what they’re learning. It makes sense to create a learning environment that is conducive to them. We have a Euro-centric system and, if the other side wants to endorse that, I pity them,” said Sanifa Holaki, a member of the NSBE at the UOIT.
