Ok, so here is my issue.......
I have dropped off resume's everywhere possible. I have tried every single store in my local mall, and big stores like Wal-Mart/Zellers/Value Village, and even fast food place (Mcdonalds,Subway,Tim Hortons, A&W,Quizino's) and I haven't gotten a single phone call back. My resume is professional and it shows all my work experience etc etc.....
and another thing, I dress really nice when I drop off resume's, I dress classy and appropriate, and still nothing.
there was a sign in my Local Tim Hortons saying "walk In Interviews" so I walked in and asked if I could, the girl looked me up and down and said no, and she was rude. I said ok and sat down with a coffee waiting for my ride, then this other girl walked in, dressed kind of inappropriately and asked for an interview to the same girl, and she said yes to her!
I almost cried.......I'm so desperate for work, or I lose my cellphone...any idea's whats wrong?
Thanks _________________

aww, i don't have any advice or anything but i just wanted to reply because im kinda going through what you're going though. I really want a job and I've handed it in to everywhere possible but still no callbacks.
And I think that the girl at Tim Hortons was really rude too.
Hopefully, we can both find good jobs soon! _________________ used to be 'sw33tlilhugz' on the old f18. (; |

^honestly, i'd go in at speak to the manager about her behaviour the next time you're there; not even about the interview thing, although it wouldn't hurt to mention one =)
i'd be pretty upset too.
the last time i went to a tim ho's this girl was really rude to me too, but i was crazy tired at 4am, so i HOPE that it was only that for her too =( _________________ formerly sugarr

Wow, that was so rude of her!! ..
Anyway.. when you hand in your resume do you hand it in to a manager? A lot of the time if you hand it in the anyone else it gets kind of lost. Introduce yourself, and get their name so you can phone back in about a week asking if they reviewed your resume and what they thought. |

I didn't know you were supposed to ask for the manager everytime. And that when I hand it in to the manager that I was supposed to ask for their name and number so I can call back. I'm going to go to the mall sometime soon and hand it out in this way to every store that I haven't applied at yet and hopefully, I'll get a callback and (finally) get a job!
Oh, and if the manager's not in, should I ask when they'll be back so I can directly give it to them or just give it to the other employees?
edit (more questions!):
I think that I'm going to go hand out résumés again this Friday. I emailed my cover letter and résumé to the store a week or so ago...but is it okay if I go to the store this week to give it to the manager directly?
And should I dress more formally or just dress casually or a mix between them? Because it seems like a lot of people I know just go hand out résumés in their regular school clothes (jeans, tshirt, hoodie, runners) and they seem to get jobs at clothing stores.
P.S. I bolded and made the questions orange so it would be easier for you guys to read or to find out what the question is if you dont want to read my long post. _________________ used to be 'sw33tlilhugz' on the old f18. (; |

Well Friday came and passed so this will probably be irrelevant, but here is something that helped me so much when applying:
[b]FOLLOW UP WITH A PHONE CALL[b].
Seriously. Even if you don't drop your resume off with a manager, call back about a week later and ask to speak to the manager (even better if you remember their name). If they're not in, ask when they'll be back. Just be like "hi, my name is Florence VonUppington (or whatever your name is) and I dropped off a resume about a week ago, I just wanted to see if you had a chance to look at it yet?"
Also, when you are dropping off resumes, ask them if they're hiring at the moment. A lot of places are currently done their seasonal hiring, but lots of places like fast food and stuff don't really care when you apply.
Good luck and godspeed!
<3 Anna
PS: Tim Hortons is lame. You don't want to work there. _________________ www.primmagazine.com |

This has absolutly nothing to do with the topic, but now I have that Nora Jones song "I don't know why" stuck in my head. _________________

um. how old are you? o_o I hope you're old enough to be considered to be able to work. I think you seem pretty prepared though. I think it's most likely to be your resume, and perhaps how you look when you approached them.
And by the way, employers are more likely to hire people who take the initiative. How do they know you take the initiative? well, you call them instead of waiting for them to call you. |

^I don't know if the question is for Autumn_Leaves or for me but I'll answer it too since we're going through the same situation. (i hope thats okay)
According to my teacher, 14 years old is the legal age to work (with parent consent) and I am 14 right now (but turning 15 four days after christmas) so I'm pretty much 15 years old. Do you think that they look at height and judge you by that when you hand in your résumé? Because I'm pretty short (5'0) so I'm scared that they'll think that I'm younger than my real age.
And if you hand in the résumé but the manager's not there, how do you get their phone number? I was always confused about that part...
Thanks for the great tips btw! 8) _________________ used to be 'sw33tlilhugz' on the old f18. (; |

I'm 18 years old, hehe.....and I really take initiative, I have called many stores to see if my resume has been looked at, I'm glad you asked that! I forgot to mention it earlier..... but for some reason they are never in when I call but I'm going to keep trying _________________

congrats!!
I also have a problem, especially with the managers. Most of the time, I'm too shy to ask for them. Or talking to them... I wish I could take initiative too! But I've never even thought of calling back to see if they got my resume...
Right now, I'm trying to get a job at the Bay. But I just don't have a lot of experience working, or even applying for a job! So I'm really nervous right now...x_x _________________ [aka mitsukoshi]
