| Quote: | Supermodel Gisele Bundchen says troubled families are to blame for anorexia — not the fashion industry, which has been widely criticized for promoting waifish silhouettes.
“I never suffered from this problem (anorexia), because I had a very strong family base. Parents are responsible, not the fashion industry,” Bundchen said in the Friday edition of O Globo newspaper.

What do you think? I quite disagree... Girls wouldn't want to be "skinny" in the first place if it wasn't for models & the media! |

I disagree about how she thinks it's the families whom are the ones to blame.
My family is a little chewed up, and we never get along. I loved my family before when Grandma was alive, because she always brought out the cheer to everyone.
But I'm not anorexic at all.
So yeah, Gisele just can't get her story straight. _________________ So Inferno.. ♥

I believe that families can contribute to an eating disorder to a certain extent.
I read a really good book about it, called Wasted, by Marya Hornbacher. She suffered from bulimia and anorexia for years, and I realized that some of it was caused by her family. Her mother was always eating healthily, and scolding her on her weight, and her mother was very skinny.
Family can influence it because they may say "Oh, don't eat that, you'll get fat," etc. etc. If one's family or surroundings is filled with "thin" people, they may get the idea that they have to be thin too.
Have you ever seen Little Miss Sunshine? The girl's father says not to eat ice cream because she won't look like Miss America. It seemed to affect her in a way, because being a pageant winner was her dream. _________________

Wow. I don't think you can pin the cause to anorexia on one thing. You can't be like, oh "this" is what causes anorexia, without "this", anorexia will cease to exist!
I guess, sure, unsupportive families and family members that are fixated a certain body types can contribute to eating disorders. However, if 'thin' wasn't considered 'beautiful' by the fashion and entertainment industry, would there be so many families that encourage their children to avoid being curvy, chubby, or fat? and yes I believe they are different things. |

I completely agree.
The cause of anorexia is more than one thing. Families, peers, the fashion industry... different things affect different people.
For example one girl may decide not to eat because she wants to look like a model, but another girl may become anorexic because she is constantly called fat at school. |

^ Exactly.
I hate it when people try to pinpoint it to ONE general reason. Like, enough of that! Every case needs to be looked at differently. Different things affect different people. _________________

I disagree. The media is a huge impact on anorexia. _________________

| PARTIALLY TRUE. IT'S A WHOLE LOT OF THINGS THAT LEAD TO ANOREXIA. FAMILIES AND HOME LIFE..IF THEY'RE UNSTEADY, NOT EATING IS SOMETHING YOU CAN CONTROL. ALSO SCHOOL AND FREINDS..IF THEY'RE ALL OVER-ACHIEVERS, YOU FEEL THE NEED TO BE THE BEST AT SOMETHING. FOR ME, IT WAS A MIX OF THE TWO ALONG WITH BEING A MODEL (MY AGENT HAD TO LET ME GO UNTILL AFTER I'VE COMPLETED THE FULL RECOVERY PROGRAM) THAT LEAD TO THAT. ALL THE PRESSURE..THIS WAS MY CONTROL. SAD, BUT TRUE. |

i disagree to some extent.. on one hand, some models could be pressured by their families to find work, thus contributing to anorexia (skinnier = higher paid). a lot of models come from poor families, which they're trying to support with modelling. the media and fashion industry DO portray an unhealthy image, and they do have an effect on models/teens/adults alike, no matter what they claim.
but on the other hand, like most of you said, anorexia comes from a number of reasons, a big factor being genetics. |

I used not really understand you know, why people keep eating. Like the fatter people are, the more often I see them holding fatty snacks or eating massive meals, so I never had sympathy for obese people.
But then recently there's been findings about an obese gene thing, so I'm not sure about the weight issue.
People probably have anorexia for a variety of different reasons, I'm not sure about genetics. I've always thought it was more about upbringing, like I personally don't care about body image because I never felt like that mattered, as long as you're healthy, that's how it's been for me. But then when I went to Hong Kong to visit, my relatives were all like, "You're so fat, you should stand to lose some weight," and I'm like, "I'm considered skinny in Canada..." so I could see how different societies influence body image and how some girls might feel the pressure. I personally don't feel pressure.
But I mean your parents helps you decide what matters, teach you how to think logically and all that. Having a good upbringing, I think, is the foundation to having a good body image, you decide whether society's idea of "beauty" means anything to you, and it doesn't for me. Just be healthy. Though it might be easier for me to say than for other people, who have fluctuating weight, sudden weight gains, naturally heavier bodies, etc. but then that's down to genetics again. _________________

i think shes a bit right on, but you guys are seeing it differently. i think both things are to blame. when she said families what immediately came to my mind was your mom and dad constantly telling you your whole life that youre gaining weight or youre chubby or that you need to lose weight, because if my mom ever did that i would feel so awful about myself. i dont think necessarily troubled families cause annorexia, but what i was saying before may. but yeah, i guess if you come from a troubled family you may become annorexic to have control, but i think a mom or dad or sibling that constantly told you you were not good enough is a bigger contributing factor. _________________ formerly known as rubbersoul |

| Some of you make fair points however, Gisele blantly said that the fashion industry makes no contribution to anorexia, it is all about family... I disagree, I think the fashion industry (along with the media and society today) is one of the top causes for eating disorders. And I have never heard about a case where it stemmed from parents telling you you're fat. I think if that happened a girl would want to maybe lose weight etc, but there's a difference between wanting to be skinny and being anorexic, no? |
