Okay today i've been admitted to York and i read the list of courses i would possibly have to take next year. In the list was calculus which scared me because i hate it and i suck at it. I thought there would be other courses like english or in the social sciences. Also im not totallly sure if i still want to go into chemistry. Would it be too late to switch programs? and how important is the first year?

thanks in advance

It's never too late to switch programs. There are TONS of people in university who change their minds third or fourth year and end up staying longer. Don't sweat it. Basically, first year for most people is testing the waters, and trying to figure out what interests them and what doesn't. If you are REALLY worried, you can try calling your undergrad advisor for your program (chem undergrad advisor) and talk to them about switching out, or if you already have another major in mind, talk to that under grad advisor (say you want to go into like, English...talk to their advisor).

But as I said before, you really don't have to panic about this stuff. They will not hound you and be like "YOU DIDN'T TAKE CALC, GET OUT" unless you are in a set program that has certain courses that you have to take by a certain time. In most programs, they have a list of classes that you have to have some of. Maybe what you should do is try it out (if you don't want to take calculus, don't) but kind of pick classes for your first semester based on what you think you are interested in and go from there.

Hope I helped!

Calculus is one course... well two, if you count both semesters. I think to let one (two) course stand in your way is silly. That said, there is a lot of math involved in chemistry, at least that's what I've found, even if it's just equations. So if you don't like math I wouldn't recommend chem, but try not to let calc stand in your way. Everyone has to take those shitty requirement courses. Like, I'm taking physics, and I hate it and I'm not that great at it, and I'm never going to take it after this year, but it's part of my freshman requirements, so I can't get around it. I'd say look at all the courses you have to take for a chem major, and see how many calculus/math classes you have to take. If it seems to much for you, then reconsider.

Thanks for the advice guys. It really put things back into perspective for me. Yeah there are required courses for any program, so i really cant let that get in my way.

I think I'm worrying way too much or feeling overwhelmed by all of this uni stuff. The entering into the next phase of my life kind of scares me. but im sure if i do make a lousy decision and go into the wrong field, i will be able to switch sooner or later.

btw, what are you guys majoring in?

Yeah, it is pretty scary to make the transition, especially if you consider that in high school you pretty much have teachers and counsellors holding your hand along the way, and in university you are much more independent. But it's a great thing to be and it's really easy to embrace it if you're disciplined. So don't worry!

And I'm a Communications major Happy
