Ok.. so my anti virus wall thing popped up and said something was trying to access the internet.. and usually its like wermexe. .. so i assume its a virus.. so i clicked block this instance.... and it came back.. so i clicked block all instances... but then my internet wouldn't work. so i went back and looked and i had blocked Explorer.exe... which is the internet....

so i tried to unblock it.. but it wont!
like for everything else unblocking is an option, but this is like permenantly blocked off....

my internet has shown an error page for the past 4 weeks...i cant use my other computer at all.. Sad

WHAT DO I DO ?=(

thank you !

Actually, "explorer.exe" isn't the internet... it's Windows (whatever version you have) itself.

If you use Internet Explorer or Firefox as your browser, it would've asked you if you wanted to block "iexplorer.exe" (or "ie.exe") or "firefox.exe"... but the thing with that is that virus scanners and firewalls automatically know not to block those... so it shouldn't be asking you.

If you did, in fact, block "explorer.exe" and your computer is still starting ok, then you (fortunately) just blocked the portion of explorer.exe that allows you to connect to the internet... OR you blocked another program (most likely a virus) called "Explorer.exe" which should be okay... but doesn't explain why you can't connect to the internet.

NOTE: It *does* matter whether or not it's called "Explorer.exe" or "explorer.exe" (note the upper case and lower case) because you will never see a critical system file with upper-case letters in it.

Without actually looking at what problem you're having with your computer in person, I'd suggest that you try:

1) Running a virus scan before Windows boots up (it may be called "schedule boot-time scan" or something in your virus program - all antivirus programs have this) so that it would scan and quarantine/delete all the files that have been affected by whatever virus you have.

2) When you've done the virusscan, run a Windows Repair. You do this by putting in the Windows CD (the same one that either came with your computer when you got it, or was used to install your copy of Windows), restarting your computer (and make sure you press any key to boot from CD). After Windows Setup has finished loading, you'll come to a menu screen where one of the options asks you if you want to Repair Windows. Select that one and it should start repairing. What this will do is reinstall all the critical system files that was damaged by whatever virus you have with new ones.

3) Once the Repair is done, restart your computer. But from the very beginning, HOLD DOWN THE F8 KEY!!! This should bring up another menu screen asking you if you want to start windows normally, start in safe mode, start in safe mode with networking, start in safe mode without network, etc. Select "Start in Safe Mode without Networking" (if there isn't that option, then just select "Start in Safe Mode"). This should start loading up windows (you might see a whole bunch of lines of text go by or you might just see a blank screen... but) eventually you should come up with a box with a bunch of text on it with the buttons "ok" and "cancel" (or something like it) on it... just hit "ok". This should load up Windows.

4) Depending on which version of Windows you have... your Desktop'll either look really bad (in 256-colors and 800x600 resolution), or look normal. The words "Safe Mode" should appear in each corner of your screen. Open up your My Computer, make sure you have the Folder view open (on the left-hand side).

If you have Windows Vista (like me), then enter this into your address bar:
Code:
C:\Users\Alexis\AppData\Local\Temp

If you have Windows X P, then enter this into your address bar:
Code:
C:\Documents and Settings\Alexis\Temp\

Of course, where it says "Alexis", you put whatever your login name for your user account is.

Here, Select everything in this folder, and delete it. If it doesn't allow you to delete it then try deleting each item IN THIS DIRECTORY seperately (don't go into sub-folders and delete those items - no point, and it'll take too long). If it won't allow you to delete certain files, skip those ones, and delete the rest.

Once you're done with deleting everything in your Temp directory, close the window, right-click on your Internet Explorer icon, select "Internet Options". This should bring up a window with a bunch of buttons in it depending on which version of Internet Explorer you have (Vista comes with IE7, X P default comes with IE6), you should see something along the lines of "Clear Temporary Internet Files". In IE7, it's a button that says "Delete..." under "Browsing History".

Whatever version of IE you have, hit the button.
In IE7, click on the first "Delete files..." button, click on "Yes".
In IE6, make sure you check "clear offline files" (or something like that).
And depending on how long it's been since it's last been done... your computer may be busy from anywhere between a couple seconds to about 10 minutes (or maybe an hour in the most extreme of cases).

So yeah. Once that's done, restart your computer.

5) Once you've restarted your computer normally, try checking to see if your internet is working properly. If it isn't let me know.
