I have been looking for work the last year and have had no luck. I have dropped off at least 100 Resume's in the last year and I think I know the problem......between ages 16-18 I had three jobs, A prep cook at a sushi restaurant/ a bus person/ and a floor person at Zellers........the Sushi Restaurant is no longer in business and I cannot get a reference from them, when I was working at the restaurant I had some health issues and missed a few days of work, they basically didn't believe me and said they would not give me a good reference & the lady in charge of references in Zellers no longer works there anymore.....So I basically have all this work experience, but no one to really prove it! ........I think that's the reason for no phone calls, having a job right now is not a big deal, I can survive without one since my parents are well off- but I want to work and have MY own money and have something to actually do throughout the week.....also I know alot of places expect you to work weekends, but I have a job on Saturday and Sunday taking care of my Boyfriends Grandma, & she pays me for it so I consider it a job and will not quit doing it because she only wants me to help her out...but again it doesn't pay much.
So I basically want to know what I can do for references, the only one I have is my mom because I do help her at work sometimes but that's it. I'm sort of lost on that whole part
And how do I bring up in a job interview that I cannot work weekends? what are my chances of getting work? I know some employers don't like it if employees cannot work weekends regardless of having a job... or will they not mind?
I would really appreciate some tips!
thanks! |

Be Agressive. I got three job offers in one week. I had no previous jobs and weak references. You just have to go in there and ask for a manager for an interview. Aggresivness is key.
Sorry about the pithy response. It's really all I have energy for. |

| ^ Thats the thing though, I have been so agressive when wanting to find work....I have called and even gone in person to Managers of store's and asked why they haven't called me and they all said basically the same thing- "we aren't hiring' .....I walked into a few places and went face to face with managers and asked for an interview because I know that I would be perfect for the job and they said "sorry, but we can't give handouts...you need to recieve a phone call and then we will do an interview with you. Also we arent hiring" and blah blah blah....they all have said something along these lines. one even said if I want a job I should be patient not waltz into a place demanding answers. |

Being available to work weekends, is a big deal for restaurants/shops. Last summer I worked at Off the Wall and when I applied I told them I was available weekends as well. But after a while, I changed my availability and they no longer gave me a lot of shifts on weekends.
Another option to get a job is through connections. Do you know family friends who are hiring or perhaps your friends have a job and their is a position opening where they are working. Ask them to keep an eye out for you and they can always recommend you to the manager.
Hope that helps. |
