For those of you moving on to university next year, where did you apply? Did you get early acceptance yet? What programs did you apply for?

I applied to McMaster [Science I], University of Guelph [Honours Science majoring in Animal Biology], U of T St. George [Life Sciences - Biology], and McGill [Science I].

For those of you that applied to U of T St. George, what colleges did you apply to? Have you visited them? I really just wanted a college .. for .. normal .. people .. lol. I'd NEVER want to stay at Trinity College or any of those .. freaky ones. Plus I want a college that gives the meal plan option.

Plus .. scholarships .. other than those regular entrance scholarships that you don't have to apply for, are you guys applying for other scholarships? I'm going to apply for one of the major scholarships at McGill, plus two major scholarships at Guelph [incl. a $20 000 one for visual minorities going into the biological sciences]. I really doubt I'll get any of the major ones though .. lol.

I applied at Carleton (Journalism), Lakehead (Political Sciences/History) Waterloo(Biology) Westen (Genetics) and Ryerson (Journalism).

Lol I know it seems like I don't know what I want to do...but I actually really want to get into Journalism...cos I know I'll never get into Western and I don't even know why I applied to Waterloo either...don't really wanna go there. My first choice is Carleton...

Anyways, did anyone apply for the Millenium scholarship? I didn't but I know some people who have.
I'm applying for a couple scholarships that I found on certain websites that involve writing essays and stuff...not involving the uni directly.

In order of preference Very Happy

-McGill (Science)
-Queens (Biology, Biochemistry, I forget)
-McMaster (Biology/Biochemstry, again, I forget)
-Bishops (Bio/Biochem)
-Memorial (well, I intend to, but maybe after all I won't, I dunno)
-Ottawa U (Biomedical program, it only takes 100 students every year and it would be sooooo totally cool to get accepted, but really I don't want to stay in Ottawa. Definitely not to point of university).

I have some essay topics sitting on my desk downstairs that I intend to write.... but in all honesty, I probably won't. I really should, though. I'm not sure if I qualify for a lot of entrance scholarships and university scholarships though, because they always mention community involvement, which I have NONE, and financial aid, and I'm guessing I'm about average, they're are definitely people who need it more than me, but my parents would appreciate it. ANYWAYS. I'm not sure if I should apply because it couldn't hurt, or not...... so yeah.

When I was still in highschool (I'll put down the full names for the non-vancouverites), I applied at:

Simon Fraser University (SFU) - for Arts... something
Douglas College - for Computer Information Systems
British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) - for some junior architect program or something...
University of British Columbia - for Arts... something
University of Manitoba - Architecture
...a few other colleges...

I didn't get into any except Douglas... but then I dropped out (don't ask).

After Douglas, I applied to BCIT and Kwantlen University-College for drafting... got in to Kwantlen... and I was put on the waitlist for BCIT (I was accepted to BCIT later, but I was already at Kwantlen). Now I'm at Langara College.

U of T St. George (Woodsworth College)
Nipissing
Queens
Western
Ottawa

I applied for Commerce/Business Administration at each university. Where I could, I selected a specialization in Human Resources.

So far, I've received acceptance from Ottawa and Western. I'm pretty sure that I'll get early acceptance at Nipissing as well. All that matters to me is that U of T accepts me.

I did apply for the Millenium Scholarship. It would be so amazing if I did get a prize. I'm applying to about 7 other scholarships as well - someone has to throw me a bone! I've basically immersed myself in community service completely and I'm going to have around 2000 hours total by the end of high school. A scholarship would be a great reward.

Oh polarfreeze, you will TOTALLY get the Millenium scholarship. All the things you've posted about your life...you've got it made...my friend applied and she's done like 50 hours of community service...the first prize is 10,000? or 20,000? Anyways, I think you'll get the first prize Happy

God, I certainly hope so. If I win first prize, I might use the money for a down payment (and a trip to Montreal). My parents said they would help me out if I win the 20K and decide to invest it in a house.

Thanks for reassuring me - you're awesomely sweet.

I applied for the Millennium one too! But just to let you know, you can only use the money for school and not for other stuff. Wow! 2000 hours!

Anyways, I applied to Business/Commerce at UBC and SFU.

Oh no - I'm aware of the fact that the bursary can only be applied to school. However, when my grandmother died, her will stated that whatever money she had would be used to pay for my brother's and my eduation. I talked with my parents before I began applying for scholarships and they told me that whatever money I win, they'll give to me cash so that my brother and I are treated fairly.

I'm not quite sure where to post this and I'm not sure if I'm overreacting or not but I'm feeling slightly panicky right now.

I talked to some friends today and a few of them already got early acceptance into universities and I think it's based on their grade 11 and first semester midterm marks. It's great for them and I'm okay with not getting it myself right now but I want to get this question sorted out once and for all..

To get a regular acceptance into a university, what do universities base their decisions on? Not including supplementary forms and all that because most (all but one) of the programs I applied for (life science programs) don't require that. I know they have access to all marks since grade 11, but do they really count that when they decide to accept you or not? Because I'm hearing all sorts of answers from different people. Some say they look at everything and some say they only look at your top six marks in your final report card for first semester and midterms for second semester.

Out of the 13 marks I have so far including grade 11 and semester one of grade 12, 6 of them are in the 70%-80% range and the rest are high 80's/low 90's. In GRADE 11 my average was 80% which is low for me. The programs I applied to mostly require a minimum of 85%. I'm doing better this year, but what I'm worried about is all those 70's I got last year and the one 70's mark I got this year (unless universities count the top 6 marks then that 70's mark this year wouldn't matter since I took 7 courses).

I know I'm kind of rambling and this might not even make much sense but I'm just WORRIED and a little freaked out right now and I need some reassurance or clarification.

Oh and another question. I'm thinking about changing one of the programs I chose to something else...the deadline to change is at the end of the first week of Feb so I have some time. Will it affect my acceptance into this program at all since I changed it so late? I don't think it should but I want to make sure. I'm probably sounding really anal by now but that is one of my personality traits and I don't want to mess up on something important like this.

^ It's 3:18 in the morning and I'm in a bit of a rush to get to bed Icon_ups so I'll just mention one thing now and finish this off tomorrow [... or today, haha] at a decent hour =P.

Anyway, I don't know if this still applies to the universities you applied to, but it just so happens I just got a big booklet/package from U of Guelph in the mail .. and coincidentally it's on my desk, flipped to the "Our Admission Plan" page =P. It says if you get early acceptance [February-ish], it's based on Grade 11 marks or any Grade 12 courses you already completed [like if you fast tracked or something], and basically if you're at the top or above the range then you get the early acceptance now. Then, in early April, they'll do another round of offers, if you're at the top of the range [not quite as high as the early admission people but still high..er] then you get an offer then. If you're within the range for your program then you get an offer in mid-May.

So if you had great Grade 11 marks in courses that are related to your program, then you'd get early acceptance now .. possibly. And if you didn't make the first round, and you got better Grade 12 marks that have been submitted later on [since semester 1 doesn't end for a lot of people till .. now .. actually, haha], then you might get an offer in April. And if you miss THAT round of offers then once they get your interim marks for semester 2 and you do well, then they'll offer you in mid-May. .. right?

But that's just for U of Guelph [though the other universities I applied to operate by the same dates too].

Plus in their FAQ section:
"I did not do well in Grade 11 but I am doing very well in Grade 12. Will you be admitting all of your students on Grade 11 marks?"
Although we will be using Grade 11 marks in our first round of offers, a substantial number of spaces will e saved for the second and third rounds of offers using Grade 12 marks.

From what I've read in general though, at least for the ones I applied to, for REGULAR acceptance they look at the average from your top 6 completed/in-progress Grade 12 U/M courses, paying particular attention to prerequisites. For example, I'm applying to life sciences too, and most of them say you NEED English, Calculus, and 2-3 from Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Algebra + Geometry. They look at your Grade 11 marks to see if they can give you early admission [since your Grade 12 marks haven't even been submitted yet!], but if your Grade 11 marks suck, they'll wait till your Grade 12 marks are submitted since those are the ones that really matter, and you'll just get an offer in April or May [.. like a regular offer, not early]. Or if your marks are really borderline then they'll look at Grade 11. So yeah, for early acceptance .. they'll look strongly at Grade 11. But for regular acceptance, your top 6 [not necessarily the highest 6 marks but the ones you NEED for that program] from Grade 12 will have the most weight.

I hope this actually helps =S.

^Yes! THANK YOU for the clarification. It actually made me feel a bit better. Since geometry was actually the low mark this year and I know it's not really needed as one of the prerequisites.

I wish I could get early acceptance just so I don't have to worry like this but I don't think that's really possible because mann...in terms of grades, last year really sucked for me.

this is probably a silly question, but i was wondering if universities look at the letter grading on your report card ( like the E, G, S and N) or even the teacher comments. Im freaking out cuz all of the comments bascally say "she does not actively participate". Sad

^Ohhh, I thought Alberta had a similar application system as Ontario. Here you pay $105 to the OUAC, a processing centre that takes everyone's applications online and sends them to the universities, so you don't actually directly apply to the university itself. You get 3 choices, and for each extra choice beyond that you pay $35 each.

Oh really? I have never heard of that. We can apply to how many we want, and seperatly apply to each university and pay each of their fees.

So far, I've applied to Langara and VCC.

I'm also planning to apply to:
- Kwantlen
- Douglas College
and MAYBE UBC. Not too sure..... UBC is like, the "It" school to get into, *for asian parents at least*.. but to me, going to schools is like buying clothes. You pay more for the well known brands, just like you pay more for the well known UNIVERSITIES. It's all about the name.. >=T

When I applied a couple of years ago I applied to...

-UBC (Arts, hoping to take the first year arts1 program)
-SFU (Arts)
-Kwantlen (Interior Design)

I was all ready to get my portfolio together and go for the interview at Kwantlen to get into the interior design program....but in the end I didn't think it was what I wanted to do so I just...didn't show up to the interview lol.

I didn't apply for any scholarships but I ended up getting the $2000 UBC entrance one plus another $4000 one from my dad's association at UBC. I should have applied for more, but I just got lazy and since I didn't have much volunteer experience I didn't really bother....

Good luck to everyone! I hope you get into your first choices!
I recommend to everyone though to apply to one college as a fall-back. Just in case something terrible happens and, say, you flop all your finals. At least you won't have to wait a year to get back into it-you can go to college for a year and then transfer.
