I always noticed how everyone dresses the same, in the same bland over done styles, no one has their original style. But lately I've been noticing how people are so pround of their unoriginality and scoff at other's who dare to dress different. I'm all for trends, I wear trends but I dont wear the most bland thing that half the school is wearing and then think I'm supa- fly.
A couple of days ago, I was wearing this pretty awesome outfit, not the usual lace cami and lululemons and this girl insinuates that I have no style. Meanwhile she's wearing a lace cami, jeans and pumas, how original is that?
I've noticed that more and more, that people are actually proud of there lack of originality. Not to mention the styles I see everyone are wearing can be found at every store in the mall. Why be happy to blend in? |

| I couldn't agree more. What's worse is when they roll their eyes at you and make snotty comments behind your back; just because you don't look generic. I mean, I know my clothes aren't so nice, but I've made a conscious decision to dress really boring than to be a clone! |

Most people find comfort in blending in.. dressing like their peers so they're accepted.. that sort of thing. I read an article somewhere a while back that said most people don't express their true selves until university or even later.. kinda sad. _________________

| fashion_boy wrote: | | I read an article somewhere a while back that said most people don't express their true selves until university or even later.. kinda sad. | This is very true. I can attest to this observation/study (or whatever it was). Up until graduation, people are just afraid that they'd be persecuted (is that the right word?) in some way just because they're different - that they aren't "normal" - that they stand out from the rest of the crowd. This reason (among others) is why most people of the queer community only "come out" after highschool.
Interestingly, in high school, there are always labels. These labels set people apart from other people - cliques, basically - so while people are trying to "blend in", they're also different at the same time.
Then, after highschool, these labels don't really matter. The "adult world" looks at people as who they are and what qualities they show (unless, they display some socially controversial characteristics). Yet at the same time, some of these people (as I said, myself included) show who they really are - becoming different.
Quite a paradox. |

It's so hard to find a balance. Most people either totally blend in or are totally out there. I'm all for trends, but I try to do them in a way that looks a little bit different than everyone else. I think for most people it's just easy to blend in-there's no hassle from other people or even trying to FIND stuff that suits your particular style otherwise.
Alexisgeek is right-high school stereotypes definitely play a role. We all tend to feel the need to fit into our group and dress like them. I know my friends and I all dressed the same in high school but since then (although we all do dress similarly) our styles have become different from each other.
Unfortunately it's always been that way-people always critique those who stand out.
Actually though, although I've noticed less stereotypical "labels" at uni I've also noticed a lot less diversity than there was at high school. |

| THATS why you take a look at high-fashion magazines and get inspiration from people like Kate Moss who is ORIGINAL and then add a little twist to make the look your own. I WANT TO SHOW PEOPLE AT MY SCHOOL THAT I'M MORE THAN BLACK AND WHITE! |

^I want to show people that I'm ASIAN!
Ha, ha, I am laaaaaaaaaame.
Personally, I look to my Japanese friend and Japanese magazines for inspiration most of the time. And nobody dresses that way except for my friend. =P I guess it's a good thing I'm so fobwashed. |

I think its easier for everyone to just dress the same while in high school.
You go to American Eagle and fill your wardrobe
through in some lululemon and a TNA sweater... and your pretty much my school.
I know I dress differently but I'd rather face some negative feedback from the average clone than look the same as everyone.
I prefer to buy at thrift shops, vintage or consignment stores, small local designer boutiques, and so on. I'll still go to ae and buy somethings, but I'm not going to walk out looking like the manican.
I get alot of my inspiration from streetstyle blogs from all parts of the globe and magazine like NYLON or some foreign ones. (then also if your into vintage looks or celeb style like kate moss, sienna miller, l.lohan i suggest "the lookbook" on adorevintage.com) _________________ if you were a melody,

My school is soo different.
We have an art program and the students in it take up like 1/8th of the school's population. Then we have the normal collegiate program.
And half the school has the art kids who dress artsy/thifty as their style icons
The other half looks down on their style.
I personally love their style, I just don't like standing out so yeah I wear the normal clone-wear. But I look down on the people who look down on the art kids! |

That's true... everyone's the same these days. I bought this cute shirt I liked and went to pre-registration day at school, and everyone was wearing a similar style. It made me disgusted. I'm probably not wearing this shirt again. _________________

lucky people. I much rather have a bunch of clones walking around than bunch of wangstas telling me that they're gonna kick ass my back to asia. i'm going to have to get used to hoodies that zip all the way to the top.
I don't see why people are like that. I guess it's sort of reassuring for some reason. |

At school last year...
there were like waves of TNA tracksuit clones
I'm not saying that the tracksuits suck but it's so overdone...
So i chose myself a very "revieling" tank top that the teachers will go all "OMG DETENTION!!" and put a pink t-shirt underneath.
I'm sure people are already doing it but, hey i never saw anyone doing it so i said what the heck?
A few months later people started doing it too =] _________________

| My school is a little different. All the 'scene' kids/'emo' kids dress the same, then there's the people who just stick to ae/aeropostale/hollister, then there's the tna/lululemon people, etc. Most of the people in my school dress pretty bad :\ Leggings with runners, cardigans with gym clothes.. I don't necessarily follow those trends. I like to wear cardigans, skinnies, scarves, etc. I guess people are afraid that if they dress differently, they'll get made fun of. I once wore high-waisted shorts for the first time at school and I kind of felt insecure that everyone would scoff at me, so I wore a scarf so that people wouldn't notice the high-waisted-ness, but everyone loved them! It's good to be daring. |

Aaah I remember the year when the TNA suits were in, I think i was in gr6 or 7 and beggged my parents to spend 200 on it. Nowadays I try to avoid stuff that scream hollister, abercrombie etc. I'll still buy from there because it's an easy place to find stuff but I like not wearing the same things as others. I guess people notice cause i get ask alot, where do you get that stuff?
It's kind of weird and uggh seeing a bunch of ten year olds with fake lvs going into abercrombie kids or hollister prancing around talking in their cell phones. Or young kids going into aritzia showing mum what they want, but i guess I can relate.
people are doing things at a younger age, and not just buying certain clothes |

i can't say i have much of a style. it's something i'm working on. see i don't really want to spend the money on really high end clothes, especially up until now because each year i always get a little taller and gain a bit of weight. so i think now i'm safe to buy more expensive clothes because i won't grow out of them, but the thing is we don't have a lot of stores around here to shop at. i think once i get into university i'll be able to broaden my style a bit and dress a little more originally. i really want to be able to pinpoint style, because right now i don't really see how it boils down to everyone being an individual. in my opinion style isn't a big deal, i mean yes you should be a little original and not a clone, and flatter your body, but it's really personality that makes us different. and now i just went on kind of a long ramble. but anyway i'm working on it! im getting sick of the poor quality of hollister like stores. going for quality! _________________
