Okay so I got gel nails put on about... 2 weeks ago and they have grown out and chipped a bit so I want them off. I tried to pull them off which hurt. A lot. So I just clipped of the white bit since it was way too long, but now I still have the gel part on my nails. Nail polish remover isn't work too well unless I soak my nails in it for a long time (I tried with one nail) and then scrub and file it off.

Any suggestions?

Fill the Quick Soak bowl with hot tap water to the fill line. Squeeze the bottle to remove excess air and tightly seal the cap.

Pour enough remover into the fingerbowls to cover the nails. Drop a few marbles into each fingerbowl to give the client something to 'play' with while her nails are soaking. Make sure the entire nail or nails are covered with the solution.

Cover the hand and dish with a terry towel and soak for 15 to 30 minutes. Do not lift the nails out of the remover for the entire time. Lifting the nails from the remover will allow the nail product to 'set-up' again, and will extend the removal time. Covering the hands and dish with a terry towel will help to prevent rapid evaporation of the remover, and prevent any warmth from escaping.

Lift the towel off and with the nails still submerged, lightly layer the product from the nails with a cuticle pusher. Gradually remove all product from the natural nail.

After all product has been removed, lift the hands from the remover and wipe the hands and nails with a towel. Buff any remaining product from the nails with the fine side of a Koala Buffer™ (Creative Nail Design Systems).

You may wish to ask the client to wash her hands and scrub her nails with a soft nail brush or toothbrush. Do not vigorously scrub the nails at this point.

Condition the nails and skin with oil, then massage the entire hand with lotion.

Wash hands and nails to remove lotion and oils, apply the service (reapply product, or polish the nails).

Remove all traces of enamel and buff the enhancement surface with a 240-grit file to prepare the product for removal.

Loosen the cap on the bottle of remover and hold the bottle under warm tap water for a minute or two, but no more than 5 minutes.

Saturate a cotton pad, cotton ball, or gauze pad with remover, and place on the surface of the enhancement.

Seal the cotton pad by tightly encasing it in a square of tin foil.

Apply each pad and foil seal individually to prevent evaporation of the remover.

Soak in this manner for 20 to 30 minutes. Remove one 'wrap' to check for progress, and lightly slough the product from the nail surface with a cuticle pusher or orangewood stick.

After all product has been removed, buff the nail surface with the fine side of a Koala Buffer™ to ensure all product has been successfully removed.

Condition the skin and nails with oil and massage entire hand with lotion.

Wash hands and nails to remove lotion and oils, apply the service (reapply product, or polish the nails).

Yes you do have to file Gel Nails off, but you don't have to file it ALL off. Ist prepare just as you would for a fill. Shorten and shape the nails, thin out the entire nail, and file flush the cuticles and sidewalls gently. At this point you would normally go to gel application, instead you continue filing the gel untill it's ALMOST gone. The key is to shorten the nails, there is no way for them to maintain the length the have become accustomed to w/ out the support of the gel enhancement.Next manicure the nails as natural nails utilizing some type of reconditioning treatment (such as paraffin wax). I reccommend that clients come in one additional time for a follow up manicure w/in 1-2 weeks to acess the nails and see if any gel still remaining on the nailbed is still intact----it almost always is, because it is so thin and clear and almost imperceptible. It is the rare occassions I've had to remove a set of gels (due to moving, finances, etc)(and I charge the same price as a fill for the procedure, and it takes anbout the same amount of time for removal, paraffin, manicure and polish...so it's no bother if a client waits untill her appt. to tell me she has to quit coming---more than once w/ tears in her eyes). But what surprises clients most is what GOOD shape their nails are in after the gel is removed. These clients ultimately return because of their good experience w/ gels. Gels are the wave of the future, for our clients, and for us! Don't be scared by the fact that they have to be filed off. I personally guarantee you that filing off a set of gels properly is far less work and far less injurious to the nails, cuticles, and skin than sitting in acetone for anywhere from 15-30 and sometimes even 60 minutes!

Hope that helped...

omg i had this exact same problem. except I bit at them so they cracked and then I peeled them off, where it was harder to take off I took a nail file and pried them off. Some came off naturally when I was moving my bed.. so try some heavy lifting LOL. But yah I basically peeled them off and it hurt like crap and my natural nails were so rough and nasty. But on the plus side only one bled:D

^I ended up clipping off the tips and then I bit off the base haha. I just bit on the edges of the nail and they popped off. It wasn't actually that painful except for the parts that got a little stuck to the skin around my nail.

Well, they were probably chipping and stuff because after two weeks you have to go in for a gel overlay. Anyways, if you want them off, you have to file them off. With fiberglass or acrylic you can soak them off with acetone, but the gel need to be filed off. I would probably go to a professional so you dont damage your nails.

I have always cracked them and popped them off with my teeth too lol I hate when you get one that really hurts though, and you leave it on for a few days until you work up the courage to bite it off haha
