Has anyone tried birth control pills to clear your acne? I'm considering it. It suppose to regulate your hormones, since chemical imbalances cause acne. However, one of the possible side effects of the pills is acne. So i don't know

i think i read on the old f18 that some people were on birth control (the mildest one in terms of estrogen content and all that) to clear their acne and i think it worked!

^I remember reading that too.
And I think a girl that I know is on bc for acne.
I'm pretty sure some dermatologists suggest it if you have really bad acne, but I don't know how great it'd be. Not everyone's bodys react well to the change in hormones.

Yeah, it really depends. I know people who have gone on it for acne, and it didn't work, or there were other side effects to it that they didn't want to deal with. I think it might take some time to find the right kind of pill, but you should definitely check with your doctor to see which one would possible work best for you.

I think it depends on the type of pill it is. I used to be on one called Demulen and my skin was pretty clear on it and it took away any cramps I ever had aswell lol

But recently I started Yasmin and this is TMI but it gave me the worst freaking yeast infection ever! It lasted until I went off them so that isnt worth the most perfect skin in the world haha

Hah! How weird, I just started taking birth control a couple days ago.

Not just for acne, however. I have a problem where my period comes really heavy, then disappears for months on end. But after 3 days of taking it, my acne's a bit better.

I know, 3 days, big whoop! But my doctor said it would balance out my hormones and clear everything up.

I'll get back to you guys after a couple months.. if you can wait that long. LOL. 2-3, doctor says.

I've been on Alesse for a year and a half and my skin has really cleared up.

However if you're thinking of going on it only for acne you might want to consider something more along the lines of tetracycline or something. It's medication that's specifically targeted for acne. I was on that for a while before I actually needed birth control (obviously for other reasons =P) and my skin never looked better. Probably even better than what I'm on now.

Go see a dermatologist. They'll know what's best for you.

Go see a dermatologist. I am on it right now for my acne (Alesse).. I have only been on it for like 2 weeks though. ANd remember that it takes about 3 monthes to 6 monthes to actually start working... you might want to try some other things before you try the pill.

Well, my 2 month supply of pills has been finished for a while, and my acne is considerably better.

I don't get many breakouts anymore, just the occasional pimple. Little ones at that.

But yeah, that's my experience. I think the best idea is to talk to your doctor about it.

That's right! Just stay positive.

I wish I was still taking it though. The pimples I get still bother me, although I'm thankful I don't have giant colonies of them anymore.

Although perhaps it's just the stress.

I remember taking the pills, and for the first couple weeks, being on an emotional high. I'm not sure if it was the hormones balancing themselves out, or just a low stress-level. But that was the best time for my skin, IMO.

I'm on it, and I used to get a few pimples around my period, but now I don't. I'm not completely sure if this is cause I'm on it, but considering that it's a benefit to taking B/C I'm guessing it probably is.

My doctor told me it would help, and I really think it did - a lot. I'm on tricyclen low. My skin is really prone to getting pimples but right now its basically clear as ever.

I am taking Diane 35. It says it is birthcontrol but not to rely on it like other brands. It is actually supposed to be more of a treatment for acne. Usually with any bc pill it takes a few months for the effects of the regulations of the hormones to really be noticable so patience is important.

I had acne really bad on my face and after about 4 months it has be pretty much completly clear. I sometimes still get a random small breakout before each period though. The hormone levels are different in this pill. I am not going to stay on it more than a year because there is a (very very very slight) bigger risk for blood clots with it.

I was on Alesse before this one and it did not do very much to clear up my face. Everybody is different though.

Before you choose a brand talk with your doctor because different types of acne need different strength's of treatment. There are pills for acne that arent birth control too!

Hope this helped a bit!!

^ Yeah, I heard that sometimes happens because your body's adjusting to the hormones so it's kind of all haywire cause it doesn't know what's going on, haha.

My doctor suggested trying yasmin and i did for 3 months but my skin got worse. Then my doctor said it might take more time for my skin to get better but i decided to get off it. Results differ for every person but i guess my body didn't respond well to the birth control...

most girls are on birthcontrol (where I live, at least) mostly for acne and emotions pretty much.

Since you live in Toronto your doctor will probably reccomend one of these three things:
1) BC - probably Diane-35 as it is marketed more as an acne treatment specifically but if you need it for other reasons you'll need a stronger one
2) Accutane - i've heard many horror stories about it and almost everyone who goes on it has had their skin get worse before it clears up... also the blood work scares me.
3) Antibiotics - would probably work if you have a minor case and it's not on your body. usually its a cream but sometimes a pill

My doctor put me on Diane-35 but I am very scared to get off it... In all the stories I've read about it all the women said their acne stayed clear for 2 months after they quit it but then it came back worse than before.
