Since we've been talking about it alot at school lately, I'm wondering if any of you are beginning to make decisions about univerisity?
Like do you plan to live in res, know what courses you want to take, where you're going, how you might pay(oh the horror!) how you feel about uni etc.
I'm applying to Concordia, Carleton, and Laurentian. I'm going to take International Relations and German as my major and minor.
I was talking to my mum about moving to montreal to go to Concordia, and I think I'd rather live in an apartment with room mates than in res, cause I've heard that res is like high school with more drama :/
Uhmmmmmmmmm RIGHT NOW I'm pretty nervous. I have the grades and pre requisites, but living without my family and (sounds lame...) my cat would we really hard to adjust to. Also having to do everything myself, even the little things that I don't notice, would be hard.
I'm pretty excited to go to university though. Except my closest friend will be 2 hours away
So what do you guys think about university? |

Well I'm not applying this year (I'm in grade 11) but I think alot about university.
I really want to get into Queen's Commerce so I already know I have to work hard. And it's pretty expensive, considering I will have to live in res, about $25000 a year.
My parents are planning on paying tuition, and by then we'll have $15000 saved up for everything else. I'm hoping on getting a few scholarships too, so I know I pretty much have my first year or two covered. I know the Commerce program is super expensive, and I'll eventually like to head into Finance or something.
During the summer I plan to work so hopefully that can add to that amount, and have extra money for other costs besides res and tuition (hey, a girl's gotta shop, lol).
I personally CANNOT wait to leave (which isn't till 2009 but please, come sooner). I'm really sick of all the drama in my high school and I can't wait to go somewhere new and have a fresh new start where noone has these preconceived notions about me or have heard things and judge me on those.
Plus, I've always thought that university kind of weeds out the idiots in high school from those more "mature". Whatever it happens to be, I'm pretty darn sure anywhere is better than my crazy crackhead high school. Haha. _________________

I've already submitted my applications, my choices are:
1 - Ryerson - Politics & Governance
2 - U of T St George - Political Science
3 - Ryerson - Business Management
I want to live at residence, just because I live pretty far from downtown and it wouldn't be worth my time (hour and a half +) to commute. Hopefully I get into the "good" residence, which is a single room with your own bathroom. I don't want to live with anyone. My friend's brother lives in a dorm and the stories he tells me are just.. horrible.
I worked full time the entire summer and I'm working part time now to save for university. I also saved up birthday/holiday money.. so I should have enough for a laptop, student fees, and part of my tuition, and I'm also going to apply for OSAP to cover residence. My parents did not save anything for me. (Though I did force them to open an RESP for my brother.)
I'm pretty excited to go to university.. I'll be with people with similar interests, and hopefully it'll be a more serious and inspiring atmosphere. _________________

Montreal is awesome, you would have a blast here!!
As for living in rez, I wouldn't pass up the opportunity. I wouldn't describe it like high school at all. Of course there are different groups of people, but how could you possibly become good friends with everyone in a 200-person building? The atmosphere is just so unique and fun, and you meet so many different people... I can't imagine anyone not wanting to take advantage of that. Yes, the caf food isn't fabulous, but most of the time it beats having to make something yourself. Yeah, I share a washroom with nearly about 15 other people, including guys. Yes, people can be loud and obnoxious the night before your chemistry midterm, but you just get mad at them and they're usually considerate enough to shut up then. But I definitely think I've met people here that I'm going to know the rest of my life, I already have so many memories, and I've only been here a semester. I actually miss it when I go home!!
Depending on where you go, and what sort of program you plan on doing... I wouldn't stress too much about courses. For me it was really easy of course because freshman science courses are outlined pretty strictly at McGill. That said you don't choose a major until second year, and people often change programs and faculties while they're deciding what they want to do. Keep your options open, and make sure you read the course calendar and visit the guidance counselors. _________________

I think for first year seeing as you're in a new city and you don't know the areas (the good and the bad) and how the city "works" it would be best to live in rez for the first year at least. You'll get to meet lots of people and find your way around the city. Plus (coming from someone who lives at home and commutes to uni) it's SO hard to meet people when you don't live in rez. Classes are big-my first year I only made a few really close friends. Yeah I've heard there can be a lot of drama, but it's a good way to "ease" into living totally on your own and you'll meet lots of people in a new city |

Where i'm applying:
1)Laurier- Business Administration
2)Waterloo- Public Accounting
3)Schulich-Business Administration
4)Queens- Commerce
5)U of T SG- Commerce
i REALLY want to leave home so that's why Laurier is at the top of my list. hopefully this summer i'll get a job and i will for sure start saving money to pay for uni, plus my parent's have been saving up money in an RESP for a pretty long time so they tell me i'm pretty much covered. hopefully i get some scholarships as well. so far i've applied to 3, let's see what happens.
i'm really excited about university! i hope its a lot different from high school and all its redonkulous cliquey-ness. i think res will be sooooo fun, when else will i be living in the same place with so many people my age. but at the same time i hope it doesn't distract me from my work considering i need to own first year to get coop in second year at laurier. |

I applied to:
Waterloo - Environment & Resource Studies
York - Environmental Studies
Ryerson - Arts & Contemporary Studies
Carleton - Arts (Environmental Studies)
I'm hoping I get into Waterloo(!). It's my first choice. The res layouts are perfect, they have a co-op program and I can get tons of international development experience. I'll get so many opportunities to work overseas =).
My second choice is Ryerson.. I'd love to get into advertising and stuff . And it's right downtown which would be sweeeeet.
I'll probably have enough money for first year with my dad's money (tuition) and scholarship money (hopefully I keep up my sweet average and get the $3000 entrance scholarship). I'm paying all my fees and down payments with the money I earn from work. OSAP will cover the rest of residence I guess.
Then second year I won't have to worry about money as much because I'll be paying for school with my co-op earnings! |

I am applying at St. Francis Xavier (its in a small town in Nova Scotia). Yep, only one choice and no backups. I have decided that I want to go there and no where else.. soo.. if I don't get in I will probably kill myself. HAHA just kidding... no if I don't get in I will upgrade and apply again.
I am planning to major in sciences, majoring in human nutrition. It interests me know but I will probably switch around majors.
So, yeah, planning on living in residence .. since I live right now in Calgary. I think it will be fun, I am actually really excited!!
As for money.. my parents will be paying for tuition and residence for my whole undergraduate education. I will be paying for everything else. I have a bunch of money saved up from some jobs. Also, when I turn 18 I will get a very large sum of money (settlement money, car accident.). So thats pretty sweet. |

I'm getting kinda annoyed at all the "teasers" I'm getting.
Windsor and Guelph mailed/emailed me with messages thanking me for applying. Sure it's nice to get confirmation that they received my application, but I just want acceptance!
My school is lame and they didn't send in the midterm marks, so I have to wait until the final grades are submitted in February. _________________

^if im not mistaken ALL semestered schools do that. theyll submit your final marks from first semester and then your mid term marks from second. your final 2nd semester ones will be submitted later, but its mostly your 1st semester final marks and 2nd semester mid terms that are considered by univiersities. _________________ formerly known as rubbersoul |

^There's actually a few universities (ryerson for some programs, and i can't remember the other) that give early acceptances based on midterms..
Almost all of them do wait for final grades though. _________________

Well I am only in grade 11 as well, but I'm already starting to plan and I plan on visiting some universities soon so I won't be so stressed next year in deciding.
I'm almost positive I want to go into the medical field. What shall I take? I don't yet know. But here are some universities I am looking into.
Guelph: for biomedical science or health sciences (I'm really not sure what they offer, as I haven't read the Guelph book for a while)
McMaster: for the same as above
Waterloo: (haven't received a book yet, might nab one from guidance at school)
or maybe Western. or maybe Queens.
So many choices! But I know Guelph and Mac for suuure.
I just need to work reallly hard in bio, I know I can do it.
Other things I may look into studying are chemistry or math.
In the future I hope to go into cardiology, anesthesiology, or maybe not specialize and stick to family doctor. Although I'd love to work at sick kids.
I could also go a different route and teach math and sciences in high school, but I'm not sure. _________________
