Does anyone know if this is actually true? Like, does makeup go bad after a certain amount of time?

I think those just might be a suggestion. I've kept make up way longer than I'm supposed to and I haven't had any problems, except with mascara. That's the only one I try to change every 3 months.

ya, and its also different for each product, usually theyll have a thing on the back that will tell you when to throw it out, it looks like a little opened jar and then it will have a number in it like ------> 12m (which means 12 months after opening)

Heres a thing on makeyp expiry

Unlike diamonds, makeup is not forever. It expires.

Yes, it is true. Those expiration dates on cosmetics are not a marketing ploy to get you to buy more mascara when you can still scrape some gunk out of your old tube.

Its a safety issue, especially with eye makeup. Every time you swash on mascara and dip the brush back into the tube, you transfer bacteria from your eyes to the tube, where it will make baby bacteria that you will then reapply to your eyes the next day. Its an ugly, ugly cycle of life.

You wouldnt eat food past its expiration date, would you? (Husbands would, but would you?) Dont wear cosmetics past their prime, either.

Most cosmetics are formulated to have a shelf life of one to three years when stored according to directions. Products that have been exposed to high temperatures or sunlight may not last that long.

Heres how long specific cosmetics can usually be stored. Start counting when you open the container. Since youll never remember or be able to keep up with everything, write the expiration date (calculated from the time you opened the container) on the bottle with a permanent marker.

 Mascara: 3 months

 Cleanser: 6 months

 Eye shadow: 6 months

 Foundation: 6 months

 Moisturizer: 6 months

 Concealer: 6 to 8 months

 Blush: 6 to 12 months

 Lipstick and gloss: 1 year

 Powder: 1 year

 Toner: 1 year

 Nail polish: 2 years

Applicator sponges and brushes: toss disposable ones and wash others regularly.

Keep makeup containers tightly closed and store them at room temperature. Toss anything that looks or smells bad. Yuck.

Bear in mind that natural cosmetics, and those that have no preservatives, may expire sooner than others. You should never add water or (worse!) saliva to thin out a foundation or other cosmetic. Do not return unused foundation to the container. Discard if you accidentally pour out too much. Do not share cosmetics. (Similarly, avoid testers in department stores.)

Pshhh I'm not throwing out my eyeshadow after only 6 months. I've had one of my palettes for a year and a half and it works just as well as it did when I first bought it.
Ahhh. As long as it works lol. The only thing I don't like to keep for a long time is liner.
Stupid makeup rules.

^i agree, throwing away eyeshadow every 6 months is such a waste of money. it's hard to use eyeshadows palettes really quickly so there will definantely be a lot in the palette even after 6 months. a lot of people spend tons of money on nice makeup brands, so throwing them out following these rules would be very costly.

I think those are just guidlines that some people follow when they're not sure.. but if it still works fine with no problems, you shouldn't have to replace it. I notice that my mascara doesn't work well after a certain time, and that's when I should get new ones.

I don't know if it necessarily goes bad, but I know that the scent changes. Sometimes, it smells better, I find haha.

Mascara is the one you should be the most concerned about. Depending once your mascara starts to smell funky, and the texture gets a bit strange, this is when you should buy a new one. I don't think there is a "set time", because it all depends on the brand, usage, etc.

As for eyeshadow, once it is crumbly, throw it out. This doesn't happen for a while, especially with the really good brands. I think it is just a general rule with anything in powder form: once it is crumbly, throw it OUT.

I think liquid eyeliner would be the same rule as mascara.

I am always buying new makeup though, I am a makeup freak haha. Plus, I alwayssss lose things!

^Hmm that's good to know. So far after 4.5 months my mascara still looks/smells fine so I think I'll keep it for a little longer (especially since I can't replace it in Canada!)

replace eyelash curlers after 1 year? what if they're nicer/stronger brand kinds? or does it mean just replace the pad? cuz i would think for the more expensive ones they'd last more than 1 year

^I assume it would just be the pad. There shouldn't be anything wrong with the curler. Although when you replace the pad, and even more often before than you could always disinfect/sanitize the actual curler.
