Do you shop for clothes in America because of the higher prices in Canada?
Always. I shop in America for everything.

Anyone feel like going to America to shop because of the lower prices in America, like compared to Canadian prices? especially with the dollar being so high here now, is it more incentive for you to go across the border and do shopping there?

Mainly, I mean clothes and stuff, obviously.

I definitely go there for the stores we don't have here, and also to buy clothes that are way cheaper over there. I bought a dress there for around $300, while here the same one would have been around $400.

Of course I go there to buy clothes that aren't here in Canada like Abercrombie Kids. But I do buy clothes now from America because they are a lot cheaper, like Abercrombie and Fitch jeans for $79.00 that are $108.00 here. But I don't buy online, buy dad travels there often, so I get him to fetch some stuff.

I voted for the last one. The price difference doesn't really bother me that much because it's expected and if I really really want something because I love it so much, I'll just get it. I'll go to NYC once in a while just to shop at Nordstroms and Saks and for other stores we don't have here. And now that the Canadian dollar is higher than the US dollar (1 USD = 0.97 CAD), it will take a very long time no doubt, but eventually, the prices here will start to drop. Of course now you could say that the high price difference is unfair cuz our dollar is higher than America's but it's only because when the clothes were manufactured, our dollar was still much lower. But hopefully eventually prices here will start going down...

And also, in more recent times, a lot of the American stores have come to Canada (Forever 21, Abercrombie, Hollister, Aeropostale etc) so I can just buy it here. And I'm sure other American stores will eventually come up here...it's like an ongoing trend.

I don't live that close to the border so unless i'm spending lots, it's not worth it to go to the states. if i was already there, then yes of course i'd shop! but i'm not going all the way there probably because i'd just shop at all the same stores!

I voted for 'rarely.' My family almost never goes all the way to the US just to shop. Canada now pretty much has everything that the US does, minus the department stores and higher end shops (APC, Marc, Ralph Lauren etc), and I can't afford to go to the US to splurge on designer merchandise anyway.

But what IS worth going to the States for, is 1) the department stores; you cannot beat the combo of Macys/Harvey Nichols/Barneys/Neiman's/Takashimaya/Saks and ecetera. 2) Selection: because of the all the department stores they naturally have a greater selection compared to the one Holt Renfrew, and even chain stores Zara and H&M have more merchandise. Plus they still have great stores that we don't have, like J Crew, Anthropologie, Uniqlo (but that being said, Canada does too have stores that the States doesn't!) 3) Outlet malls.

Depending on how close you are to the border, I still think that it's not worth going purely for shopping unless you are planning to splurge, or buy things that you can't buy here.

But I'm going to New York this week, so might as well shop since I'm there! 8) Thank goodness for Woodbury.

I think its worth it to shop because the even though its true we do have alot of the stores that people once went for here, the clothes are still cheaper there! I saw a jacket a Gap that was $88 here and $48 there. Thats a huge difference! But I goto Niagara Falls all the time so going over there if I wanted isnt that big a deal I guess.

whenever I want to see how much something I like from the U.S. cost in canadian
I usually go to xe.com for currency exchange
so I was checking how much $60 american was, and it said it was $58 canadian!
so either something's messed up, or it's for real

^It's for real. Read my post above. The Canadian dollar is now higher than the US dollar.

sometimes I think about it, I really don't think it's worth it, but my brother's like, "it's because you don't have a job" like I don't understand the value of money, so that's why I'm not into going to the US. I'm kinda busy I say, I can't spend like an hour driving to the border, then back again!
ditto on that point about the department stores though, it's fantastic what they have there, the fun level of shopping is definitely upped Razz

At first people were a bit I guess unhappy about the currency being so high, but I think it creates competition amongst retailers you know, so they'll lower prices an' that. And also maybe make manufacturing and shipping a bit more competitive, not so excessively taxing, efficient, so our prices can keep on par with economically sound markets around the world Happy

I've only gone shopping in the States once (for only that reason), and that was when I lived in the lower mainland and we went to Bellis Fair. My mom really disliked it though, and I don't think she'd ever go to the States just to shop again. My mom is very... I don't know if there's a word but she'd rather support our economy than the State's, which makes sense. Now that I live in a bigger metropolitan, though, I don't really have any urge to go shopping across the border.

I put 'occasionally', because pretty much all the time I refrain from buying from stores here like Abercrombie and stuff since the Canadian dollar is stronger.

I only shop there for things that I can't get here. Before Christmas I ordered a bunch of stuff online because the dollar was still high and there was a big markup for the stuff in Canada.

I like shopping at the department stores in Seattle too-they're so much nicer than ours! I'm going to go back down next month so hopefully the dollar is still strong then!
