Who here tries hard in school? Like, if you get a "B" or lower you feel disappointed? You almost always do your homework...etc. It seems like it's supposed to be a harsh, critical thing if you're called a "nerd", or "geek". What is your opinion on that?

Try hard! I never did and I have to pay for that now. But I dont think caring about your school work equals geek! All my friends had really good grades and I guess we were considered a "popular" group of people.

I agree! It's good to try hard in school because it pays off when it comes time to apply for uni.
But you should also make sure you don't study so hard that you don't get to have a social life. In high school I took some art courses too so that I wouldn't get burnt out from all the academic classes-and just make sure you don't skip out on life to study hard which I've seen people do.
I guess my school was pretty academic because most people (in many different "cliques") tried really hard academically.
And you should always do your homework! It's such an easy way to boost your mark up anyways :P

I try hard in school. I guess some people think its "geeky", but I don't think anyone really thinks anything of it. It's possible to do well in school and have a social life too.

I don't. It's not that I don't care at all, but I don't go over the top trying to get the best grades ever. I know I could do better, but I'm still generally happy with the marks I'm making at this point.

I do care about my marks, and I am the "smarter" one of my friends, but I've never been called a geek. The purpose of school is to get an education and do well to be able to move on to post secondary school, so I don't see the point of screwing it up by skipping/not doing work, especially in grade 12. There are WAY too many students in my school who have already "graduated" but stayed in school because their marks weren't high enough for university. That's a waste of an entire year in my opinion.. if they had smartened up last year and didn't fool around they would be in university right now. I don't sit at home studying for hours on end; like greenism said, it is possible to balance both a social life and academics.

i think doing well in school is such a big part of life.
i always do my homework, i try to hand in things on time.
i don't see the point in skipping.
i try to get only A's and B's on my reportcard.
i don't think i've been called a geek seriously because there are others who are way more focused on school. i think im just a goodie, goodie. such as, im in grade 10 and i have never skipped, i don't party, drink, do drugs, smoke, i follow rules
i agree that you can keep a social life and still do good in school.

And just to add, even if someone did perceive you to be geeky, who cares? You'll be in a good university with high career prospects, while the ones that skip and are deemed "cool" will end up flipping burgers at McDondald's. (no offense to anyone who works there for a part-time job! i'm talking in the sense of a career..)

You have to work hard in high school to get into a good school. But more importantly to create really good study habits. I did get into a great school because I did work hard, but I wish I had taken more than just 6 courses last year because now I know what it's like to be burnt out.

Geek to me isn't critical. It's successful. Because trust me everyone here knows how to have fun when the weekend comes around (except now during midterms - I'm at the library on Saturday night), but we all (try) to crack down and work during the week.

Advice: Make hella-good study habits. Now.

I try hard in school because was raised to and I suppose I want to do well. In high school if i got a b or lower i was a bit disappointed. And i always did my homework, which i recommend. In my opinion, its fine if you are called a nerd or a geek. Some people find it offensive but i do not, no one should. I feel proud of myself if i do well in school and it a good thing. Develop good study habits and skills because in university or college you will need it.

I've always been a part of the popular group but I'm always the nerd of the group. I'm never the prettiest or the one that gets all the guys but I'm satisfied being what I am.

My friends don't try hard (most of them, my best friend is pretty good) and alot of them party or drink or smoke weed or do ecstacy (don't get me started). I don't judge them for that because it is their choice, but when they pressure me, I don't feel bad saying no.

I don't do alot of the stuff they do because being "smart" or "geeky" is important to me, and I don't care what I'm labelled, I just want to be successful. I try super hard for my grades and I know in the end it is going to pay off.

I can balance my good grades easily. I don't watch alot of TV or anything because of it, but I have a job, I play field hockey and I am out alot with friends. Balance is key and I feel I can maintain it. People wonder how I do it but it isn't hard when you plan what you are going to do.

I read The 7 Habits of Highly Efficient Teens, and it comes highly recommended from me because that is how I learnt to balance it all in the first place.

Happy

Look at my username. I'm proud of the fact.

HOWEVER, there are quite a few arguments as to what *exactly* defines a "geek", a "nerd", and a "dork". To me:

- A "geek" is somebody who tends to have specialized interest and has extensives knowledge in one or many things/areas. For example, a makeup artist could be called a "makeup geek". A person who's extremely interested in philosophy and has alot of knowledge in it (i.e. a philosophy major) is a philosophy geek. For me, I'm really interested in sci-fi and comptuers (and electronic stuff)... so I'm a scifi geek, and a computer geek. The same term can be applied things such as... being a fashion geek. Razz

- A "nerd" is a person who tends to do very well in academic subjects.

- A "dork".... well, after 5 years, I still haven't figured out a definition for this one. Someone who does "dorky", silly things? Sometimes partakes in activities not usually "expected" of their age, perhaps?

Of course things like being successful or having social skills (or lack thereof) and such are not in any way characterstics of whatever "group", since that sort of thing is a characteristic of anybody, really.

me too! ive never been called a geek or anything like mean-ly like i focus on school and i definetly work hard but im not all about school all the time. Maybe thats why? my friends say that im like a nerd as jokes sometimes because i have to do homework or projects instead of going and doing stuff with them sometimes but i get it over with before and they are cramming it all in last minute. I think getting good marks, or just getting an education is the key to succeeding, without an education you dont have much options.

i've always been an overachiever I suppose, and i have been teased in a friendly way about being too smart etc. i don't think i really try hard for my marks or anything, i just do the work. it's been that way ever since I started school, I was offered to skip grade two. I'd never gotten lower than an A- on my report card except once in gym I got a B+ in grade 3 and I cried about it. Sad Right now the only subject I'm actually working hard in is phys-ed. I've got high As in everything except communication, where I've got a 68%. I'm very disapppointed in that...

I definitely try hard in school. If I get under 95%, I'd be disappointed. So yes, school and getting good marks is really important to me. And sure, I am a geek and a nerd, but I don't mind. I have my own circle of friends and we have fun, even if that doesn't mean hanging out all the time. My plan is definitely to get into a good university, so if I want to reach that goal, I have to be smart about it and work hard.

I'm not really sure when it all started. I think in like grade 1 and 2, I did well but I was closer to being average. I don't really remember. Grade 3 was a year where I was learning to balance and do homework and stuff, again I was just average. But grade 4 was different. I became a different person. I was an overachiever, putting detail into everything. I was getting As. This continued through to grade 6, and then grade 7 I got to the point where all my marks were above 80. Grade 8 was even better for me, with a 91 average or something. In grade 9 I don't think I even realized it but I had the highest average in my grade, 94. But recently, last year, my marks have dropped. The work wasn't really harder. But I guess having a job and a social life takes a toll on your grades. I mean I went down to a 92...big deal. But I wasn't the top...it was another girl. And you know what? I'm ok with that...yes I'm upset I'm not top, but then I realize that I am well rounded! Sports, job, friends, life, school. I think I'm doing pretty well compared to that girl...she has no life! This year though...I don't know my marks aren't what I want them to be...76, 83, and I don't know my others but I suspect 90s. Ahhh chem and bio are killing me! I bet I can get them to go up, but I really need to work hard this year, or I will kick myself forever..

But I don't think I'm a geek, yes maybe a nerd, and maybe I'm not Ms. Popular but I am friends with mostly all groups, and I have a close group of friends...that's all that counts in my opinion. I like my life, and I want to succeed. Yes..I am an overachiever.

I try pretty hard in school. I get disappointed if I get a mark below 90, but I have friends who are still not even satisfied with a 95. It's not like we get picked on for it, but then again I go to a school where the focus is on academics. And if we do, it's always in a joke-joke way. Not everyone at my school tries really hard, but they still do well.

i'd consider myself a nerd..with waning self-discipline! weird, I know! but for much of my high school 'career', I didn't need to study. Instead, I'd just listen in class, take notes carefully and review as required for tests. My average was around 94% when I graduated (my provincial exams' marks were higher than my school marks, lol) but my popularity was just about 0%. I didn't care (that much ..) though cuz the people in the giant, popular clique who were mean to me are now not doing so hot. partying and stroking each other's egos can do that ;)_orange

now, i'm in university and honestly, very high marks (85%+) are DIFFICULT, even more so for my chosen major. it's true that the skills that one learns in high school are fundamental to a good work ethic. for example, i didn't, and still don't, believe in mechanically taking notes; I internalize the concepts as I take notes.
I guess my problem now is being motivated again. I know i can do great things when I put my mind and heart into it. I do have some tough stuff going on in my life right now (i'm sure you know what i'm referring to...maybe?) so perhaps that's part of it? too bad willpower is what i lack -- I NEEEED IT! :P

so much for being a nerd eh?

^Yeah I usually gear for a 75 average and my average in high school was 80-85 :S But that's because the average in classes can only be around 72-73, if it's higher they make them scale it.

I try really hard in school my averages are usually about 92% or 93%. I feel bad when I get a mark lower that 85% on anything. But I would not consider myself a geek. I am good at getting high grade but I am not particularly smarter than any of my friends, if that makes sense. I guess I am really good at tests and projects so exams are not too hard for me. Sometimes i'll say something geeky then I might get a "quipe" out of one of my friends as a joke lol.

I really want to get a scolorship when I go to university because I know it will be really hard for my family and I to pay for school, which is fustrating. So i tend to put a lot of pressure on myself to get good grades.
