So our dollar has surpassed the value of the American dollar!
:icon_yahoo:
I just don't get why things like books and magazines still have an America Price and a Canadian price, when really they should be equal?? And why the same article of clothing or the same car is cheaper in the USA then it is here?
I hope this changes soon because there is no excuse!!
What are yall's thoughts on this?

| Its pretty exciting! I am going to Buffalo in a couple weeks to do some shopping. Although it can hurt our economy since it was some what beneficial for the American dollar to be higher. Like in regards to the movie industry, movies were always made here in Canada because it was cheaper, but now its the same so we can lose some of that. |

The prices will probably remain different for awhile... just think about how far in advance companies print books and magazines and when they make clothing. I wouldn't expect anything to become cheaper here anytime soon.
I would love to go shopping in the States, but my mom would never let me. She says I should be supporting our economy, not the States'. And I know she's right of course, but I'd love to take advantage of the deals. _________________

The funny thing is, is that one of the reasons that our dollar is high is BECAUSE people are apparently spending more (as well as many other factors, but that *is* one of the reasons).
That's how I understand it anyway. I'm not an economist. |

| Our dollar is worth more now because americans are continuing to spend a crapload of money despite the fact that they're trillions of dollars in debt and adding billions every day...All in all, they're going to crash, and it'll end up having slight repercussions on us (such as large Canadian companies that sell mostly to Americans...Ex: my dad's company loses a million everytime the dollar goes down 1 cent..), but in the end our economy will probably end up surpassing the Americans'...*says my economy teacher* |

One of the reasons things are more expensive here than in the US is because of the high import duties for retailers.. and those won't change, so prices here will still remain high.
For those travelling down to the States, make sure you get rid of all the price tags on any stuff you buy and pack it as if you originally had it.. my friend went down to Buffalo, and when she was returning to Canada they searched her car and she had to pay almost $100 in taxes on the stuff she bought. _________________

You dont always have to pay the taxes. They made her pay because she tried to hide it. I declared $500 worth of clothes a few months ago and I didnt pay any taxes, they let me right through. They are more concerned with alcohol and cigarettes/cigars etc because they are so much cheaper in the states, clothes is really about the same so there is not that great a loss. But if you try and hide it and get caught then they are just gonna teach you a lesson lol But you can also take the tags off and just put them in a different bag. I am to paranoid for that though |

YES when I heard this I was so excited, because then now I can go to the states and get merchandise for so much cheaper. Also, when I went to Buffalo, I didn't have to pay taxes when I came back, it was $200 worth of stuff. _________________
