My first *real* job is the one I have now... after 3 years of working there. lol

What was your first job experience like?
I was nervous. Wasn't entirely sure what was expected of me. I never worked for anyone before... I wasn't really sure of my own skills, either.

Were you scared?
A bit, yeah. My boss was crazy.

How is it to get a job?
I'm not sure, really. Like I said, I've been working the same job for 3 years.

What do employers want from you?
Besides my soul? LOL... just trying my absolute best (and then some more). Don't tell them I can't do something or don't know the answer to something when they ask me. Umm...... ask me later. Razz

How many places did you apply to before you got the job and what did you do in order to get that job?
My friend was already working Tech support there... they asked him if he knew how to design&code websites, he didn't, then recommended me. I impressed them in my first interview by showing them how I redid their website. They were very impressed. My friend left a few months later... and I took on his responsibilities

I'm still working at my first job. it's been about 9 months.

What was your first job experience like?
I was kind of nervous. Two of my friends worked there as well so it wasn't so bad. I was just afraid of messing up for the first little while.

Were you scared?
Not really. I barely saw my managers and the people I worked with were really nice.

How is it to get a job?
I've only had the one job so I'm not sure.

What do employers want from you?
To do my job. I'm also a supervisor so now they expect me to be a role model and do all the right stuff. My managers are really nice though and pretty easygoing so I haven't had too much trouble with them.

How many places did you apply to before you got the job and what did you do in order to get that job?
I applied to a few random places and then to where I work now. I got hired on the spot since they were opening a new location and needed a ton of employees.

What was your first job experience like? My first job was at Claire's. I was excited to work in retail. I worked there for six months but I decided that I wanted to focus on my schoolwork. I don't think I'll work there again though, because I felt that the schedule was unorganized, the policies were too demanding, and that I wasn't trained well enough to be comfortable in my work.

Were you scared? A little, but that's normal.

How is it to get a job? Both a huge relief (to finally get my foot in the door) and a little nerve-wracking (aren't first experiences always like that?)

What do employers want from you? Someone who is reliable, confident and eager to learn.

How many places did you apply to before you got the job and what did you do in order to get that job? Many! I went to so many stores in the mall, dropping off resumes. I was desperate by the time I reached Claires, and luckily enough, the manager was in and we arranged an interview straightaway. You just gotta keep trying though!

My first job was at Quizno's, and it was a nightmare that I quit after two weeks, so I'm not going to count that as a job. Sportchek was my second job, so I'll use that since I stayed there for three months.

What was your first job expirience like?

It was... alright. Really boring, and difficult to make money after being put on commission.

Were you scared?

Yeah. I didn't know anybody, and it seemed like everybody already knew each other.

How is it to get a job?

Rewarding, once you settle in a little. I met some really great people from Sportchek.

What do employers want from you?

They wanted us to SELL as much as we could (which is why they put us on commission after a month). They wanted us to do our assigned jobs as best as we could, and not complain. The less questions ABOUT my duties I asked them personally, the better. Most of the times I talked to them was if I had an issue with my schedule. If I had a question about something else, I'd just ask the other associates.

How many places did you apply to before you got the job and what did you do in order to get that job?

I only applied at Sportchek, but I followed the tips on F18 for my interview.

What was your first job expirience like?
hell. i left after one month and i cried on the way to work sometimes. at least i learned that in the future i never ever want to deal with people, i just want to sit behind a computer or something uninterrupted and independent like that.

Were you scared?
definately. i was afraid of screwing up (even though i know that's probablly stupid) but i just did EVERYTHING wrong.

How is it to get a job?
when i got the job i was happy but when i had the job all i did was complain.

What do employers want from you?
all of your time.

How many places did you apply to before you got the job and what did you do in order to get that job?
it was the first place i applied and a really good friend of mine had been working there for a long time so she got me the job. not that it's very hard to get a job at MCDONALDS anyways... (see? like i said, hell.)

What was your first job expirience like?

I'm at my first REAL job now. As in - I'm not being paid under the table and it's not operated out of a dark, dank basement. I absolutely adore my job and cannot get enough of it. I am learning so much and I am exercising skills I never knew I had. Plus, I have many advancement opportunities ahead of me and that excites me greatly.

Were you scared?

Not really. My boss is so nice. Her children have actually asked if they could adopt me (they're 8 and 10 years old). My boss' family absolutely covets me. They've made it very clear that they don't mind me making mistakes because that's what people do. Actually, my boss broke a $100 vase today and we just laughed it off. It's a cool environment.

How is it to get a job?

I really enjoy my work and I look forward to going in everyday. If you love your job then you will never work another day. I actually can't believe that they pay me for my job. It rules!

What do employers want from you?

I'm expected to be punctual, to dress nicely (I generally wear heels and skirts/dresses), to be polite to customers, to be expedient at doing my work whether it is arranging flowers, wrapping arrangements, ringing people up, or setting up events. That is all I have to do to not be fired. However, I received a promotion after 3 days of working there because I was so willing to learn and eager to help even when it's not really in my job description: ie. picking my boss' kids up from school, taking the garbage out, I've even accompanied my boss to school functions because she doesn't know many people there.

How many places did you apply to before you got the job and what did you do in order to get that job?

I applied to a lot of places; countless in fact. When people look at your resume, the first thing they see is that I was born in '89 and thus they think that I'm too young to be capable. I gave them my resume, had a phone interview with my boss, a face-to-face interview with her and her husband, then went in for a day to see if I fit in.

How is it to get a job?

What do employers want from you?

Last summer was when I started to get a feel for what working full-time is like. But that was with my mom, so it was obviously a lot more different from a typical first job. I'll use my current shitastic job, Harvey's, as my "first".

What was your first job experience like?
It sucks. It's Harvey's. Low pay, no actual benefits. Grimey at times. And it's hot as fuck because it's summer. It's bad enough to make me want to quit, but I'm sticking it out for now. Socially, it was awkward for me because I was really timid and shy at first, because most people in fast food are extremely easygoing.

Were you scared?
Yes, but I shouldn't have been. I was more worried about the people I worked with than my job.

How is it to get a job?
My friend hooked me up this this job lol. But to get hired here is really easy- you're practically guaranteed to get hired.

What do employers want from you?
Well, MINE apparently likes it when people suck up. I do but I don't want to. That's why she never gets mad at me. They want you to do the job without complaining, and be polite to customers basically.

How many places did you apply to before you got the job and what did you do in order to get that job?
I got a hook-up here. I applied at like 8 other places [retail] but I looked like complete shit when I handed in my resume, so I guess I'm not surprised I didn't get a call-back... not to mention I had the ugliest resume.

I'm so negative lol.

My first job experience is terrible. Like the previous poster, this will be very negative . . .

Working at a downtown TIM HORTONS

What was your first job experience like?
Let me just say, it's "shitastic" as well. Initially I had the perception that this was going to be relatively easier than say, McDonald's, since it is a COFFEE place and what is so hard about pouring a bunch of coffee? Let's start with the most severe problems. I think it's dangerous. Especially during rush hours which the whole store is filled with people. You have to work extremely fast. It's very tiring at the end of the day. You have to tolerate rude customers and be very patient when the customer 1) Changes their mind (thus forcing you to do the transaction all over again and waste precious time) 2) Don't speak English. 3) Throws money on the table and forces you to pick it up piece by piece. All shifts are crap, you get a choice between 7am-3pm or 3pm-11pm or 11pm-7am. My store (Bay and Bloor) offers a 10 cent raise every YEAR. WOW. Fantastic.

Were you scared?
I was scared that I wasn't going to get the job. I didn't really think about the duties.

How is it to get a job?
It would have been great if it wasn't THAT specific place. I come home reeking of coffee and just pissed. At work I have no time to socialize and n one to socialize because very few knows english. The pay is minimal for the amount of work.

What do employers want from you?
All my manager is capable of saying is "faster faster" despite everyone trying their hardest. They expect you to be VERY available, and switches your shifts very often. Also, I think my manager inspires fear in the employees because he is very unapproachable. Terrible work place...=.=

How many places did you apply to before you got the job and what did you do in order to get that job?
Last year I applied maybe...4? This year, I applied to Old Navy and Gap near my home and I didn't get in. I applied to Tim Horton and I got in. But I understand why I got in, because no one wanted to stay at such a crappy Tim Horton's. Perhaps other Tim Horton's are better, I don't know. But the experience really can't be that different.

What was your first job experience like?
For the first few weeks I was nervous that I'd screw up, but after a while I got more comfortable since I already had previous education in the field.

Were you scared?
I was scared to death of one of my bosses; he would always be yelling and angry, but then after a while I found out that's because he's in the middle of a nasty divorce with his wife.. and he never takes out his frustration on anyone, so by now I'm just used it.

How is it to get a job?
Great.. I love getting a paycheque in my name, working in a pleasant environment, keeping myself busy (during summer I usually become a sloth.. not anymore!), as well as having the opportunity to learn something valuable towards my future career.

What do employers want from you?
They want you to ask the right questions, be a quick learner, and be independent. My co-workers told me about a woman who had previously worked at a large accounting firm for TWO YEARS. When she was working for us, for every task she was given, she needed to have someone stand over her shoulder to make sure she was doing it right. Needless to say, she was quickly disposed of.

How many places did you apply to before you got the job and what did you do in order to get that job?
Since it was through co-op, and my accounting mark (and overall average) was high, my teacher had sorta bragged about me over the phone, so the "interview" was merely a formality. I gave them my resume, and they asked me some questions about my computer literacy skills.
