Hi, I'm just getting into photography. I just bought a camera (nothing fancy, a Canon Powershot A570 IS) and I really want to learn how to take awesome pics. I was wondering could anyone critique my photos and give me some tips?
Here is my album:

Thanks in advance!

(also if anyone wants to show off their photography go ahead Very Happy )

Some of your photos are alright but I would really suggest using the appropriate settings depending on what you're shooting. For close-ups make sure you use a super macro if you can, or just a normal macro. Depending on the sun you might need to adjust the colour balance, change the iso if you're taking action shots, etc. Perhaps do a bit of reading about each function and next time you'll get some awesome photos! Not to say none were good, because I did think a few were quite nice... Also for the close-ups of the cat I felt they just looked weird and they were supposed to look artsy. I think that's a beautiful aspect of photography, certain things will look certain ways naturally. Maybe don't zoom in so much, because you can always crop them later, and sometimes it looks strange if you cut off a person's head and to even it you can't just out cut off some of their body (for example). Other than that I thought they were good for a first (I'm assuming) try, good luck with your next "photoshoot" :P I'm looking forward to seeing those ones.

Wow thanks SOO much! Thats exactly what I was looking for people to post! Yep, I am really new to photography (just got my camera a couple days ago actually haha). I'm still trying to figure out all of the funcions and stuff.. its really compicated haha. I'm thinking of taking a photography class somewhere so I can really properly learn how to take good pics... I sort of feel iike i'm feeling around in the dark with this because I really don't know too much about it!
Thats kind of funny that you said to not zoom in too much because I posted them on another forum and they said to zoom in more! haha.
Just curious, what shots stood out too you as being better?

Also, if you want your photos a little better looking, get download an Adobe Image Ready, if you already have Photoshop, that's fine, too.
Now, go to Paint and create a large box and fill it with any color (you can define your own custom colors, or leave it white and play around with it in IR/PS) and save it.
Open the Image Ready/Photoshop and then open your photo and color filled box.
Now, if you need to resize your photo to make it smaller to fit the color image, that's fine (make sure it is zoomed out 100% so you know how what the size is, really).
There is going to be a marquee tool. Click on that and create a box around the photo, if you need to cut some of the photo out, just don't include it in the marquee. Now, click on the selection tool and select the area inside the marquee, drag it towards the paint image. (if it is a little smaller, it's okay, you can crop it later if need be)
On the left hand side (you may know all this, I'm not trying to insult your intelligence, just telling anybody who wants to know.) there will be a box of the two images, the solid paint and the photo. Make sure you have selected to photo. Right above that will be a box that says normal, click on that and select your blend type. You can play around with the color on the solid layer and/or play with the different blend modes to see what looks best for that photo).
You can paint with the paint brush, add text, or be done with it! It's a simple way to make your photos look even better, Here are some examples:

this one I made the photo b&w before I dragged it to the paint, I didn't crop the extra stuff off, and I made little paint markings.

and this one, is just the basic thing, it was a roseish-toupe color and the lighting in the picture was awesome, so it was cool.

Thanks for the advice... those look really cool! I really love the colors in the second picture. I don't have any image editing softwear right now... I think I am going to get photoshop eventually anyway. But yeah, thanks I am trying to play around with it righ now

I don't really know all that much about photography, but I took a basic class in high school.
Here are some of the main techniques I learned to use:

Rule of thirds. (One of the best things I learned)
The subject of the photo does not have to be in the center, If it is placed on one of the points of the rule of thirds it can look better. You kind of did this with IMG_0279.

Use contrast.
Having the subject contrasting from the background allows it to stand out and give it the attention it deserves. You did this in the images of the girl on the swing: the blue sky contrasting with the girl.

Different angles can make a picture more interesting. A photo doesn't have to be straight one.

Those are the few things I remember from the class. If you're really interested in photography and getting better at it you could always take a class, or take out a book on it. Or even learn more about it online.

Some of the best ones (imo of course) were 0097, 0323, 0377, 0202 (this one had very nice vibrant colours but the cat's tail and feet were cut off awkwardly), & 0422.

Zooming is an interesting aspect. The closer in you zoom (especially on your camera, and most unless you've got one of the super high quality ones most people can't afford) the less focused (that's not the word I'm looking for but I can't think of it right now... I guess the picture looses it's detail, so it's always best to get as close to the subject as possible.) the camera is. Also, cropping can give your picture an artistic edge, but only if done in a creative way. That's why it's best to take a full picture and then crop it anyway you'd like (and that way you can crop multiple sections).

Here's some of my more recent photos. I know they're nothing special but I'm still getting used to my new camera. Also, I've discovered my talent for cutting people out!

as for tips, i don't really have any but i am taking design studies at school and next year i'll (hopefully!) be majoring in photography, so i will definately have some tips then!! for now, i thought i'd share my portfolio with you guys, these are the pics i sent to the school & got accepted for.

i took most of these on the west coast in march and on trip with the boyfriend to jamaica in february.
enjoy! these are very, very amature, and i'd love some critique as well ;)_orange

(and sorry about the size, i had some difficulties resizing some of them.

The black and white one is gorgeous! I like taking pictures and I bought a fancy dSLR and everything but I never get any time to take any! But you should goto Henry's and ask them for a simple book they recommend.

hey guys!
sorry i didnt want to start a new topic, and since this is photogrpahy, i thought i could ask it here.

is there any websites (amazon, ebay, etc) which you would recommend to buy photography equiptment from? (I'm looking for lenses). I've looked on ebay, and there's not much of a price diff from the ones in stores. And i've tried amazon.com, but i'm not sure if they ship to canada, and there's probably huge customs fees.
so do you guys know of anything in canada??

Noir, I like the swings one and the close-up of your cat's face Very Happy from the album you originally posted. good work ! But your most recent ones are amazing!

Mike the pictures of your brother are realllly cute, it's also great how he's not paying attention. Very professional.

I love taking good pictures, and seeing great pictures. I shall post some soon.

^^Those are really good! The last one's my favourite. I like the framing a lot. And that's a really sweet dish/holder in the second one.
