Avril Lavigne, Nelly Furtado, and Britney Spears... to name a few. A few people who've either sold out or changed.

I honestly have to wonder, if these people could go back 4 years in time, and look at their lives the way they are now, would they be extremely disgusted with themselves.

Take for example, Avril Lavigne. A few years ago, she was this skater-chic, anti-Britney. And now, she could be Britney. She's dressing girlier and girlier, and her sound is becoming poppier. She used to say she'd never be like this, and now she's the product of her own hate.

And Nelly Furtado. I don't care if you deny that she's become a sellout... there's got to be a little part of you that knows she has. You may think her music is better now that she's changed, but she's just collapsed under media pressure. She's changed her image, she's changed her sound, all to fit the stupid norm that most people want to see. I didn't like her music before she sold out, nor do I like her music now. But at least I had respect for the old Nelly Furtado, for her individuality. The new one shows she doesn't have a backbone.

And now for Britney. If only I could see Britney go back in time and look at her life now. She'd have a breakdown. She used to be this quiet, slightly innocent, small-town girl. And now she's divorced with two kids, her ex is doing a helluva lot better than her (as in Justin, obviously not K-Fed), and she's acting out against her own life in her own odd way (points for originality, I must say).

And they don't even realize how much they've changed and it disgusts me. I know there's such thing as moving on with your life and growing from your experiences, but... I say you're fake if you don't take that little bit of yourself from the past with you. Trying to be someone you're not is bullshit, and the only ones who can truly see that are the only ones truly being themselves.

Hmm. I think I will have to disagree.
I don't think changing is the same as selling out.
Sure, Avril and Nelly criticized the whole pop-starlet thing, but aren't they allowed to change their minds?
A year ago, I said "why do I need to wear makeup? I look fine without it" and I didn't own any. Now I don't like leaving my house without it. I became girlier...I guess I sold out?
People grow up. They are allowed to change. The only difference is, I don't have a million people following my every move.
Everyone says things, but people are allowed to change their mind.
They got bored of doing the same-old, so they tried something new.
Anyways, I think with Avril's song....I'm assuming you're talking about "Girlfriend"....I think she's trying to mock the whole situation. I really can't take the song as a serious one.

I don't think they're trying to be someone they aren't. I think if they stayed the same, they would be pretending to be something they aren't.

And, as for Britney...she's making quite a lot of mistakes. It's very unfortunate that she has to do it in front of the whole world.

I agree with The_Alphabet. I think what selling-out really is growing up, or moving on with life. You can't be one thing forever (eg. a no good rebel until your married with kids, etc.) It's just a new phase, new point in life.

I think there's a difference between growing up and selling out. Yes, maybe 5 years down the road you're completely different. But lately, I've been seeing no celebrities growing up whatsoever. One week, they're their 'normal' selves, and the next week they've done a 180°, and it makes me say "I'm sorry, who the hell brainwashed you?"

It seems to me that they're not changing personally, over time (which should be key), yet they change overnight because they want the publicity. It's pathetic.

I agree with Heather completely.
Yes, there definitely IS a difference... and the thing is, for Nelly Furtado, the only reason she had for her "change" was "I'm just musically promiscuous!"
Bahhhh.
I don't know if I could say that Avril "sold out" since her old image worked like magic for her anyway, and she's not a teenager anymore. I'm bad at explanations and stuff so I'll stop here.
But yeah.

Avril's sound hasn't changed that much, she had alot of "pop-py" songs on her first and second album.

And about her image....so what? She was sixteen years old when she came out, now she's twenty two. Alot of teenagers go through rebellious phases where they dress "punk" or are anti-authority or whatever. I mean really, if Avril was still wearing the ties and the black eyeliner, *then* I think you should be worried cause not only does it confirm that her image was a gimmick, it means she never grew up.
Stuff happens in six years. People mature.

Besides, who are you to call them pathetic, or say that they're changing their personality? Do you know them personally?

I agree, except for the part about Avril & Britney.
I think Avril just grew up... As people grow they change. I think Britney collapsed under the media, not conformed to it. I don't think she is fake, I think she is having a lot of problems in life right now, like any human being, except hers are exposed for the world to see.

i hate to disagree with you, but..everyone changes in their lives. what my beliefs may be one day could be entirely different in a year. its human nature, sure it may completely contradict what weve said in the past, but its in our nature to change. for example, i used to say i would never own a pair of ugg boots and then i finally bought a pair like last year and everyone was like "i just completely lost respect for danielle" wtf! i mean, its a pair of boots for crying out loud. just because my tastes have changed and ive "sold out" doesnt make me less of a person, ive just changed over time. same goes for these artists, who really cares? i dont really like it when they "slut" themselves out but if they sell out, so what? theyre finally achieving the success theyve strived for and deserve.

All of the above named artists have been bowing to record company demands since day one. The only thing that has changed are the record companys demands which change depending on whats popular now. If youre signed to a record label they have almost complete control over you. And its just business for them, they dont care if the music is good as long as it sells.

That's actually pretty damn true. Maybe one or two people get a break, if the record company likes what they're thinking.

Another note: I ALWAYS KNEW AVRIL WAS A FAKE. I KNEW IT. I KNEW IT. HAH.
I never liked her. She has been on my nerves since grade four.

Yeah, when I saw her pose for some magazine and she had like no shirt on, I was really put off. She's definitely a sell-out.

^Why is that selling out? She's not showing off, she's just showing off she's comfortable in her skin.
Why is every bit of confidence seen as slutty and every bit of change seen as selling out?

But it was slutty. She had her top off to the whole bloody nation. All she (and that magazine) wants is more sales. Now, I can understand from a business P.O.V., that more sales are always the way to go, but they've totally thrown ethics out the window. It's bullshit to think that the only way to gain sales is through being sleazy.

^^She spoke out against it so much and slammed celebrities who did that sort of thing, and now she's doing it. Even though it was the past, I doubt that if she really had as much as integrity as it seemed, she'd go topless. Of course, that sort of thing usually works out for the "best" for people so... if it was against her morals to do that and she did it, I'd question her authenticity or whatever.

It wasn't playboy or maxim or anything. I saw the picture, it was in good taste. She wasn't in trashy lingerie in a provacative pose, I didn't see it as "Look at me, look at my body!" more like "I'm confident in my skin, I won't let anyone bring me down."

Change is a good thing (usually). People generally change to make themselves happier (whether it be with more money or whatever). Avril did that interview awhile ago (I think I read it in 24Hours newspaper?) where she addressed that issue of her selling out, and she even stated that she hasn't really sold out. That the old image that she had was when she was just a teenager, and the has changed since then, and this is the way she is now.

As for that topless thing. I haven't seen the picture myself, but there are many reasons why people would have such pictures of themselves taken. Yes, one of them is for porn or whatever, but the other IS because they're comfortable with who they are and what they look like. Them posing (tastefully) semi-nude, and happy, is a much better example to make than all (unfortuate) girls (and guys, too) who aren't comfortable in their own skin, always thinking that they're ugly when they're not.

I myself have self-esteem issues - especially with my appearance. I don't think I'd ever have a picture taken of me nude to be shown in/on a magazine. But if I did, I would imagine that I would have alot of self-confidence and I would be comfortable with myself. If it was possible for such exemplary amounts of self-esteem were injected into me by means of taking pictures, then sign me up.

All in all, it really comes down to choice. If the person thinks/feels that they're such a decision or activity (or whatever) would make them happier and/or more comfortable with themselves, then they should do it... regardless of what anyone else thinks (unless it's illegal... like... murder or something... then they shouldn't do it... lol).

I've been thinking about tha tlately too. I agree.

EDIT: Okay, I've read all the other posts, and I think I've got a bit more to say.

First of all, the Avril cover:

http://www.stuff.co.nz/images/296415.jpg

Because you know, that's really "tasteful". Rolling Eyes To me, that just screams trashy. Posing topless doesn't mean you're growing up. Avril's new music is just a louder version of Hilary Duff.

Nelly Furtado:

I'll admit I like her current music more now, but I definitely respected her old self better. We all know that she's more popular now than she was back then. I liked the fact that she was different back then and was okay with it. Now she's just like all the other singers out there because she decided to change to appeal to a larger crowd so she could sell more. Therefore, she's a sellout.

Britney:

I honestly believe she was always a product of a record label. Still, she doesn't have to become so provocative to prove that she's grown up. Remind you of Avril much?

Generally, these girls are sellouts for the REASONS they changed, not because of the fact that they changed.

I haven't listened to Avril's new stuff, I didn't really listen to her before she changed, but I really think her new style fits her much better. Everybody knew she was a poser already, when she was all "sk8er boi!!" and she didn't even know who the Ramones were.
Britney, I think just a miserable stressed out lady, people should just cut her some slack IMO. She's much less a sell-out than a burn-out. She used to be, well, normal and relaxed. Now she's slid into becoming this southern hick, this country bumpkin with too much money to handle lol. I think she might have had a mental breakdown when Justin broke up with her.
Nelly Furtado looks alot better now, and her music is great. I don't think she sold out, I think she just feels newly confident, and she's translated that into sexiness

I don't think you can really judge whether someone sold-out without it being like real obvious, like 5 days after a hippie rant the celeb becomes a Republican lol.
It's been a long time, people are bound to change, but somehow because celebrities are essentially glorified images, we don't really grasp it when that image changes without our public consent and we kinda want to beat them up for it, like "Why aren't you who I thought you were? Sell-out!" but did we really know them, do they divulge their true thoughts to tabloid interviews?
Really, who really understands the mind of a rich-ass spoiled celebrity! I don't want to :icon_wrong:
