I want a great eye liner. What's the best type, the pencil, the liquid, ?? What's the best eyeliner you've used?
I don't want to look dramatic but still bold, and I have natural black hair. How dark a shade should I get? _________________

Umm depends on what look you're going for. All types of liner (liquid, pencil etc.) are good depending on what you want. As for colours, black is obviously the most useful, but you can use dark brown for the day.
Personally, I use pencil liner and black shadow over it to make it last longer.
I hate liquid liner because I suck at using it. I use an angled liner brush if I wing out my liner a bit. I only have black shadow & kohl liner as liners. But you have to get a really good black shadow, so I suggest you go to a makeup counter for one. I like the NARS one. |

liquid definitely makes your eyes dramatic but it can be difficult to use if you dont have a steady hand. pencil is easy to use but i find after a few hours it ends up smudged under your eye. so i guess the best one is to use a angled brush (MAC sells really good brushes). _________________

& i know for a fact that that is NOT true.
if you have black hair, chances are that black would look better. if it's natural, that is. brown doesn't show up well on my skin, and black looks a whole lot better. _________________ formerly sugarr

| Has anyone tried the MAC powerpoint eyeliner? It's supposed to be waterproof/smudgeproof/etc. but a lot of eyeliners that claim to be smudgeproof don't really last long. Is it worth getting? |

^ I've got it in Bordeauxline ..
To be honest, it's not fantastic. It certainly lasts longer than the Kohl liners but it's not exceptional. Then again, I have REALLY weird oily eyelids, but still, I'm lucky if it lasts 5 hours. Plus, I don't like the consistency of the liner, it goes on relatively smoothly but it tugs once in a while.
If I want staying power, I always go with the MAC Fluidline Eyeliners instead .. I got Bordeauxline since I wanted a rich purple eyeliner, but it didn't stay for very long, so I got the Fluidline in Macroviolet instead and I use it way more. The Powerpoint is good for just throwing in your bag and using whenever you have to [I mean it's not like it fades right away, it's sitll a decent liner], but for eyeliner that actually STAYS on my lids I always go for the Fluidline .. plus the colours are wayyy more vibrant, in my opinion. |

| ^ Yeah ok maybe I'll try Fluidline. I'm really hesistant about it though since I'm afraid of wasting a lot just trying to practice getting it on right. My friend has Fluidline in Macroviolet as well and a black one too, but she's really good at applying it. Meh maybe I'll get the powerpoint one in the meantime for a more everyday thing. I have the same oily lid problem as you and the kohl liner really just doesn't last. |

^ Fluidline is actually really easy to apply, wayy easier than regular liquid liners. Just be sure to get the right brush [either get hte one the MAC MA reccomends .. or get the one I got, a small angle-tipped brush from Quo which works great], and use a TINY TINY TINY amount of product because just a tiny tiny tiny amount is enough to create a thick line.
But yeah, on the downside, it's soo inconvenient to bring it around with you when you go out, hahaha. |

^^Fluidline: MAC store, MAC counter at The Bay.
^I think so... Intense Liner or something? It was ok. But I basically suck at application in the first place so... that just ruined it for me. =P |

| If you havent used eyeliner before, I would start off with just a pencil. It doesnt really matter where you get it, but all the good ones are made in germany so check the label to see where its made. If you do want to try a liquid eyeliner I would recommend mac. I have their liquid eyeliner in the pot and I apply it with an angle brush and its way easier than regular liquid eyeliner. |

^ yeah that's the Fluidline, right? I just bought it yesterday in Blacktrack and I love it SO MUCH. I'm so glad I didn't get the pencil instead! (thanks lady_h!)
I didn't buy the angled brush from mac though because it was $22 and I was hoping to find a cheaper one elsewhere.
lady_h: you mentioned you bought a Quo brush for the fluidline - do you remember how much it was? I was at London Drugs yesterday and I couldn't find Quo, but I found one by Lise Watier for $16 (which I didn't get).
Has anyone tried Blitz and Glitz fluidline? it's black with gold flecks but the black didn't look as black as Blacktrack in the store. Is it worth it? I have a mac glitter eyeliner I got last christmas so maybe I could line that over the Blacktrack instead?
I'm also thinking of getting the Macroviolet |

| I have the blacktrack too! I havent tried the quo brush, but I bought the mac brush because its good quality and if you take good care of it, it can last you like 10 or more years!! Oh and make sure you get a brush cleaner so that you can clean it. I recommend cleaning it like once a week. |

You don't NEED brush cleaner- in most cases, baby shampoo will do just fine. Although I juse use Softsoap, probably not the best idea lol.
I personally don't own MAC brushes (at least not YET...) because it's sooo expensive for me, so yeah, Quo's pretty good. You should also try Sephora's brushes (I think they're a bit cheaper than MAC), except their crease brush (which I own) didn't make my creases very "pronounced" and it tended to fan out a bit while applying.
I don't take really good care of my brushes, and I find the problem with Quo's liner brush is that after a while, I can't make very sharp lines anymore. So I have a flat liner brush from Sephora for those cases. =P
My cousin doesn't like Quo's crease brush, since some of the hairs fell out.
I do think it's worth investing in good brushes, but if you're not doing anything professional then I think Quo's alright. |

My Quo brush has lasted .. 2-3 years so far? And none of the hairs ever fall out, and it keeps it's shape, so I'm very satisfied with it. I think when it included tax, it was about $11? Not entirely sure, this was a really long time ago!
And I second Sephora brushes .. a lot of my face brushes are from there. I have sometimes spent more on the brush than the make-up item itself, but in my opinion, sometimes the way you apply something matters more than the quality of the product itself.
Blitz and Glitz is good for people who want to wear black without going overboard or looking too dramatic, since dark black black eyeliner isn't always for everybody. The glittery bits don't really show up, and it's more of a soft black .. less dramatic, but still black. But if you already have Blacktrack, and you feel like trying something different, skip Blitz and Glitz and go for a different colour. I LOVE Macroviolet .. when I first tried it, I wasn't that impressed, since it seemed kind of dull. Then I went in my car and randomly saw my reflection in my rear view mirror, and it was SO bright and vibrant .. I was so shocked. |

wow thanks so much for all of your suggestions and such. I totally forgot about checking here so when I went shopping yesterday I bought a hard angle brush from Benefit. I haven't tried it yet, though so I hope it'll be alright.
I'd have to wait a long time before getting a Sephora brush (darn I wish there was one in vancouver).
ladyh_, thanks for the advice on Blitz and Glitz. once I get the hang of applying fluidline I'll probably go back for the Macroviolet.
oh yeah I bought a MAC paint in Mauvism yesterday and it's soo pretty alone or under my purple-based eyeshadows!
oh and another side note, my friend and I were navigating our way through the new holts and we were blown away. and we couldn't resist getting the Chanel Glossimer lipglosses....so expensive but so worth it and now we're too scared to use it. lol |

I had the same problem with my pencils a long time ago .. I think I either put them in the freezer first or warmed them up first before I sharpened and it seemed to solve the problem. Unfortunately I did this a long time ago so I don't remember which extreme I went to =P hahaha.
But I *do* remember that it all stopped once I got a MAC sharpener .. I have never broken a single pencil since. I actually have 2 of that same sharpener now =P. It wasn't that expensive too, if I recall correctly ... |

The MAC Fluidline is a gel liner - it comes in a pot and you need to use a brush to apply it (hard angle or pointed, tapered tip eye liner brush). A little bit goes a very long ways, so it's well worth the money! ($20). Liquid liner is in a tube with with a wand that has a little paint brush tip to apply...I think some brands also have felt-tip type tips now? From what I hear (haven't personally tried) liquid liner is harder to apply because you have less control with the wand rather than a brush. I could be wrong on this...
Anyways, the MAC Fluidline is the best long lasting eyeliner (IMO) that doesn't fade or smudge or anything.
On a side note: yesterday I bought the MAC Powerpoint eyeliner in Bordeauxline and I lovvve it, although it's not as intense as my Fluidline. I decided to get a pencil just because it's a little faster in the morning (I'm still working on improving my brush technique for the f/l). I bought the black one for my friend's bday and she loves it too I want to get the Buried Treasure p/p next! |

Does anyone know an eyeliner that doesnt smudge? I love the gentleness of kohl and pencil liners but they smudge like crazy(i laugh a lot) and I look dead at the end of the day! _________________ [aka mitsukoshi]

| the MAC Powerpoint eyeliners don't smudge and are waterproof. I have oily lids and the powerpoint pencil stays on well (as long as you're not like rubbing your eyes or anything). They're $16 each and come in lots of shades, some have shimmer in them too. |

- I prefer pencil eyeliners because I hate neat straight lines. [I tend to smudge my eyeliner]
- I love to use different colours, not just your typical black or brown. So far, I have navy, green, and gray. I still need to get a purple, though!
- You could also use MAC pigments with an angled brush. It gives off a smoky kind of look that's eyecatching because of the different colours that you can use. Plus, it looks just like eyeliner after putting it on. [I like Cornflower and Teal]
- IMO, green eyeliner and cornflower pigment [which turns out purpleish] look the best on me. [I have natural black hair and dark dark dark brown eyes, so maybe it'll work on you?] |
