I was diagnosed with depression a long time ago (4 years ago), went through some counselling and came out better. The counsellor did recommend anti-depressants, but by the time I was better (or at least, less depressed), I didn't need them.

I've recently been diagnosed with depression Sad but i really hate how doctors are so quick to prescribe anti-depressants to everyone. Like depression is really common, and I know a few people who've been depressed too, and they're prescribed anti-depressants like on the first sign that they're sad. Like, "Ooh, you're upset with life? I think you should take anti-depressants!" Like there isn't any REAL therapy that you might have gone to the psychologist for. Where's all the "talking through the problems" that you come to expect from watching television shows like Frasier? lol

My cousin's a doctor and he says anti-depressants don't even work. Everyone I know who have taken anti-depressants say that they don't help and just make you addicted to them. Like you might as well take marijuana or heroin or something that makes you "happy" fast, rather than Paxil or whatever because they don't work or take forever to, or give you side effects.

Psychology seems more like an art than a science to me. I have trouble believing doctors because I have a few doctors in my family and they say the label "Dr." is abused all the time, like so-called doctors fudge numbers and lie about things or mis-diagnose and won't own up, and all that. Everyone's after money, pharmaceutical companies and that,
but I'm rambling! Icon_ups

I think just spending regular time in nature, like just taking a walk with friends or by yourself, just getting away from the things that bother you, that'll make you much less depressed. Neutral 8)

I was awhile ago :[ Well, more anxiety but at the time I had depression. I don't have to take the pills anymore cause things are good at the moment but I can't tell the future. It turns out I actually have it in my genetic make up and stuff, so if things ever get pretty hard I'm really prone to dipping into it again :[

I know what helped me get through it. Probably the oldest thing in the book, but whatever.

If you ever need to talk feel free to PM me.

^^Don't you mean psychiatry? Not psychology? Psychiatry is with the drugs. Psychology isn't.
Also, so what you're saying about the anti-depressants not having an effect on some patients, is that basically, the pills are placebos. It is possible, but I do believe the proper dosage is an important factor in a person's medication. Patients have to go through a few trial-and-error dosages before they find the right one. It's possible that all the patients that your doctor was talking about either didn't have the correct dosage, or the chemicals in the pills just weren't working on those people (since not all drugs actually work on everybody).

I recently read in the paper that people who identify as being queer (sexually or mentally or whatever) are more prone to having bouts of depression. Not sure where I was going with that... but there ya go.
