It's that time of the year when people are starting to hire for summer.
What are you doing this summer work-wise? Are you looking for a job? If so - what are you interested in doing?
Myself, I'm working at a florist at the Eaton Centre as the do-everything girl. I'm very excited even though I have no working experience with flowers. However, I have a lot of practical experience and book knowledge so it should be interesting. |

Even though I'm only 14 and most people probably won't hire me, I want a summer part-time job as a florist too! or a retail person at a store i like so i can get discounts! _________________ used to be 'sw33tlilhugz' on the old f18. (; |

I just got hired to be a park worker for the city
It will be my first job
I will help with the upkeep of all of the parks in Calgary. I will do things like mow the grass, plant flowers, pick up litter, etc. etc. I am really excited because I think it will be fun and defanatly nice to be outdoors! And it pays good too. |

^ I'd SOOO love to work with a day camp. I worked at a day-camp (well, it was like a day camp, only for spring break) for work experience, and I LOVED it! THe kids were just soo adorable, although some were... T________T
Are there any places in Van that would hire 16 year olds? I asked about working with them for the summer, but I would ahve to be at least 18.. ><
edit: and unless I could find another job, I'm most likely going to be working in the food court... where it's already hot... The oven in the back makes it worse.. >< |

Wow, you guys are all doing amazing things! And I'll be working in the grocery store... but hey, there's a bright side, it'll be nice and cool.
^Which is what I was going to suggest to you. Some grocery stores are desperate for help after students from college/university leave for the summer. I got hired on the spot with no cash experience. _________________ I think you're just so pleasant, I would like you for my own... |

| ^ since you don't seem to have a lot of experience and aren't shooting for a skills job, just walk into stores you'ld like to work at, talk confidently to the manager and hand him your CV. He will be impressed with your desire to work. Also, because you're only 15, alot of clothing stores won't hire you until you're 16, or even 18 in some stores. Don't worry about whether the store is looking to hire or not, most stores are always happy to find another good candidate and even if they don't need you right away, may keep your CV for the next time they need a sales associate. |

This is my first week of work! It's been pretty good, just learning how things work and selling people stuff. Guess I'll be doing this for the rest of the summer. Hope I can take a week off to go somewhere in the States. |

I've been working at a large chain pet store, for the last 2 years .. 2 more months to go, and I'm off to university and I can wave good bye to this place =P. It's been kind of insane, last week I worked over 40 hours .. including a massive 11 hour shift! Most of my shifts are 8 hours [7AM-3PM] .. luckily next week I have more late starts so I can actually sleep in =P.
It feels kind of weird that after working here for 2 years, I FINALLY made my way to $9.35 an hour [which isn't much compared to some of the other people who work there, but it's better than what I was originally getting] .. but then I'm quitting soon anyway! It feels like such a waste! |

So...it's almost spring again! Which means almost job hunting time again!
Does anyone know when stores will start hiring for summer again? I heard it was April but it seems kinda early.
And during the summer, I can pretty much work anytime (except Sundays and Wednesdays) but I would prefer to only work from mid-afternoon until evening/nighttime. Would it be a better idea to just tell them I can work all hours though? Will it give me a higher chance of receiving the job? _________________ used to be 'sw33tlilhugz' on the old f18. (; |

^I'd tell them the hours that you can work. If you tell them you can work all hours, but then can't, they might get annoyed. Plus you might get scheduled for shifts that you can't actually work and then it's up to you to find people to work for you which is a pain. _________________

Stores will probably start hiring after March Break, at least that's what ours will be doing. Usually where I work does the whole interview process and stuff throughout April and hires May/June-ish for summer.
This summer, I plan on working my regular job and then another one at the hospital, maybe. _________________

^hey, thanks! that really helps!
I'll probably go sometime between end of March to mid-April then. And meanwhile, I borrowed some books from the library for more tips on improving my résumé so hopefully, I'll be able to get a job for this summer.
And I'm thinking of asking my counsellor if I can have a job at the school cafeteria next year. _________________ used to be 'sw33tlilhugz' on the old f18. (; |

^It depends on the store and the managers.
I work at Tims and our standards aren't insane. We have a ton of employees with no experience at all. _________________

I'm not sure if any of you know what Centreville is (it's a small scale amusement park on Centre Island in Toronto) but I've applied there and I'm just waiting to see whether I've got the job or not. If I do get the job, I believe I'll be starting next week and be working there throughout the summer. _________________

I haven't found a summer job yet
Well. I don't even know if I could get a job, because I'm 15 and have no experience whatsoever. I'd rather not work fast food either. Would a retail job be over reaching? Would it be hard to get a retail job with no experience? I'm a good student and I'd have good references, if that changes anything... _________________

I haven't found a summer job either.
You are able to get a job at 15 without parent consent and if you have no work experience.
Do you have any volunteer experience? If you have some (especially if the volunteer experience is similar to the retail industry and/or if you volunteered at one place for a long time to show committment), then you'll probably have a greater chance of landing a retail job. If not, then you might have to start out with a job you might not like too much.
I know you don't want to work for fastfood, but maybe you could try some places which seem cleaner and not as gross (like Booster Juice or Orange Julius.) Or you could try applying to a restaurant and start as a dishwasher and then work your way up to a server or hostess.
I'm desperately looking for a job too so good luck to the both of us! (: _________________ used to be 'sw33tlilhugz' on the old f18. (; |

i don't think a retail job would be overreaching. my friends are 15 and some of their first jobs were in retail. also, a lot of places are desperately seeking workers right now, so give it a shot! it doesn't hurt to drop off a resume at a place you would like to work
and yes as treecow_ said, even if you don't have work experience, volunteer experience makes a huge difference
for me, i think im going to need to update my resume(i volunteered at the sunrun!)and i MIGHT go apply for a job, im kind of undecided because im going to summerschool this summer, so that might get in the way. but maybe i'll apply to work at PNE because its only for 2 weeks and i heard the pay is really good. 400-500 dollars for 2 weeks? sweet!
goodluck everyone with finding a summer job! _________________ i tried to be chill but you're so hot that i melted |

I was just looking at the Job Bank and I saw a lot of jobs at Garage (Lougheed, Surrey, Richmond, Metrotown, and New West locations), and it said "some high school", but to apply at Willowbrook for the Lougheed/Surrey opportunities (the ones I'm most interested in, besides Metrotown), since they haven't opened yet. Seems like a great opportunity, but if they're asking to apply at Willowbrook, would that imply that they'd want me to train there so I'd be ready for when the store opens? *Willowbrook is pretty far from my place
I also saw a lot of listings for Safeway cashiers (lots of locations - including one near my house!), and the pay seems pretty good. It also says under education "not required", so I'm assuming they'd hire high school students.
What do you think?
and good luck to you too, treecow_ and pinkyswear! _________________
