Hello.
I'm taking online summer school for English 11 right now and I'm a bit stuck on a few assignments and wondering if anyone could help me out.
1) For one of my assignments, I have to write a piece of at least 300 words about an ethical issue in our society today. I was wondering if teenage celeb role models (I wanna write about Miley Cyrus and her controversial pictures) would count as an ethical issue. If it isn't, then I'll just write about American politics but it's a much harder topic for me to write about.
2) I need help determining what the difference is between a report on a controversial issue and a persuasive essay. (And I need to provide evidence.)
3) I have a sonnet to translate but I cannot figure out the second half of it. I tried searching online but there's not much information about the analysis of each line/sentence. Here is the sonnet (the green part is the part that I've translated):
| Quote: | You do not look as pretty as a lilac
Or a beautiful shrub; you are not more attractive
Than small white poppies but I can tolerate
Your outer appearance; though I bend before you, though
From left to right, not knowing where to go,
I turn my troubles eyes, nor here nor there
Find protection from you, yet I swear
So has it been with mist,-with moonlight so.
Like him who day by day unto his drink
Of delicate poison adds him one drop more
Till he may drink unharmed the death of ten,
Even so, to result to beauty, who have drunk energetically
Each hour more deeply than the hour before,
I drink-and live-what has destroyed some men.
-Edna St. Vincent Millay |
4) And with the above sonnet (Sonnet I), how does Millay's use of the word 'men' ("I drink-and live-what has destroyed some men.") differ from Shakespeare's use of the word in his Sonnet XVIII ("So long as men can breathe")? My teacher says that it isn't as straightforward as it seems.
Thanks to everyone who reads this post!  _________________ used to be 'sw33tlilhugz' on the old f18. (;

1) I don't think Miley Cyrus is an ethical issue, and I'm not sure politics is, either. The Death Penalty, Stem Cell Research and things like that are more appropriate. Think life and death, religion and race.
2) The report will have no opinion and will show all sides of the issue, the essay will be one-sided and will briefly show the other side, though not in an entirely positive manner. _________________

^I agree. It is more issues about society, in the matter of life, deaths, etc.
For the sonnet, first think of it as a whole. Did you ever learn TP-CAST? Analyse the poem. (Title, Paraphrase, Connotation, Attitude, Shift (where the mood changes), Theme.) After you do this, I think that it will be much easier to translate each line. _________________

Thanks so much for helping me out! And sorry it took me so long to reply back, I was literally doing work all day and night (leave house to volunteer at 8am and get back at 4:30-6pm everyday; pulled two all nighters in a row ). _________________ used to be 'sw33tlilhugz' on the old f18. (; |
