That's how much my friend's mom's friend's sister offered to pay me if I work at her clothing retail shop.. $6/hour. Isn't that below minimum wage..? I don't have any work experience (some volunteer though) and I know that there's a ____ hours probation period but $6/hour? The pros: it's really easy work, the hours are great, the shop's near my home and the lady's very nice. I think I even get a nice discount) but should I work there? Can I ask for a higher wage....?

I would work there for the experience , but it IS below minimum wage so maybe you should talk to her about it.

I don't think it's below minimum wage
It's allowed for places to hire students for $6/hr if they haven't worked for at least 500 hours yet, but after 500 hours, she should pay you $8.

$6.00 is TRAINING wage.
$7.50 is MINIMUM wage.

eescorpius, are you sure it's 500 hours? I'm pretty sure it's 100 hours. 500 horus sounds a bit excessive.

In any case, that's the wonderful BC government for ya.

Hmm well since it's your first job and it seems pretty cool and everything, I think 6 an hour is alright.

Training wage is first 500 hours-my friend works at DQ and that's what she told me. Usually retail doesn't pay training wage, only fast food places from what I've found.

Lol that took me a while.

If you have passed those hours and you have some experiance, and there is not really a reason you should make below minimum wage, then I'd talk to her. Good luck!Happy

she might have been offering and giving a rounding figure, she has to pay you at least minimum wage.

I think the NDP wants to raise minimum wage to 10 bucks. It sounds good, but it's bad for the economy, can you imagine little companies paying $10 for some menial job?

You can be paid $6/hour for up to 6 months or when you've worked 500 hours. I think you can definitely find a better job. If you apply for a store like Aritzia or Gap, the starting wage is around $9/hour... $6/hour is the lowest you can get, and if it's a family friend, it could get awkward if things don't work out.
