Do you guys work during the school year? I was wondering if I should get a job and continue throughout the year. I never have before because I'm very dedicated to school and getting into a good university. But I would like a little bit of pocket money-- as I grow older, I start hating having to ask my parents for money. So opinions? Tips?

when you work too much, yes. i find that 2-3 days of work a week is alright and doesnt affect it much. it isn't so much the hours, but how many days you get to do homework and such.

There was actually a study done about how your gpa is affected by work and they found out that a student working 8 hours a day had a higher gpa then those not working. I'm not sure about how many days they work. However, if it were over or under 8 hours, the gpa would decline...strange

Having a job does affect your grades, but you can avoid that by managing your time (something I am not so good at!). You really need to plan ahead and get work out of the way so it doesn't end up being due the day after you work. Also the number of days that you work tends to be a problem more than hours because if you work a lot but only part of you day is taken away, you generally don't want to come home and do more work. So if you work less days, more hours that's better. Then you can do homework for a lot longer on days off, (I find once I start working I can go for hours).

I think having a job is good. For one, I got a job the end of grade 9, yes very early! I was very shy partly because I was the youngest person working there, but also I am kind of a shy person when I'm new to situations. Worked helped me so much and I have become a much more outgoing person. Of course there's that part of me that will always be a little shy, but for the most part a lot of people I meet now would never guess that I'm shy.

But it really does teach you time management. I have become better at managing my time, and this year I'm going to have to be really good because I want to lifeguard in addition to my part time job and school. I don't know if I can do that, we'll see. My grades have been in a bit of a downward slope since grade 9, but I'm pretty sure that's because of harder work, a better social life, and more extra curriculars. It can be expected, but I did notice once I managed my time better things were less rushed and I did a lot better.

Go for a job! You will notice that a lot of high achievers do have jobs. You can do it!

^st3ph, I think I'm TOO much of a high achiever now, lol. I can barely work during school, I'm so busy!

I've had a job since the end of 9th grade (and I'm going into grade 12).

I won't be working in grade 12. I'm really busy as it is with co-chairing stuff and running a charity, and I can't fit a job into my schedule, especially since I'm playing provincial field hockey this year... eeeeek!

But I've saved up a lot of money over that time period, so I really think I will be fine as far as money goes.

If you think you can handle a job, go for it. Find a place with open availability, because as the school year progresses, you might need to change your hours a bit, and you should find a place that is flexible.

Like during field hockey this year I only worked 12 hours a week, compared to 20 when I didn't play. My managers were more than willing to accept my time restraints.

I worked throughout highschool (well, grade 12) and I didn't find it too bad. Only work what you can handle. 2 days a week isn't too bad. I find that one weekend day and a weeknight is usually fine.

^^ Yeah I wouldn't suggest a job if you're that busy! Crazy! I usually work about 15 hours a week during the school year. My work is really flexible and alright if you call in because you have too much work. I book off days before tests too.

It depends. It affects me to a point, but it almost is a hassle. I only think it becomes a big hassle at a couple points in the year. Which would be near mid terms and finals. Other then that i can balance it generally well. I dont work anymore, even though its summer it took up to much of my spare time during school.. haha i like having my spare time

if youre in highschool though, i'd say work a little bit just to get used to it htough. the way i see it; unless your parents are paying your post-secondary tuition completely, you're going to have to work.

i think that you should get a job, but make sure that you have flexible hours, lots of coworkers to take your shift and an understanding boss. My sis worked 2 nights in grade 9, 3 in grade 10, 2 in grade 11, and now in grade 12 she is only taking one night. So you should do it according to what classes you have, your extras, and your social life.

I ve had a job pretty much all through high school, well starting in grade 10. I found that it didn't affect my work and during busy times like exams my employers were always willing to cut down hours to help with stress. The only time that I ve found a job hard are those nights when you get a lot of homework and have to work until 9. I usually stay right on top of my homework and be really organized that way I can avoid having homework on the nights when I work (but sometimes its unavaidable). Oh I usually work 10 to 20 hours a week and I still had time for homework, friends and badminton, but now I don't know exactly what my hours will be in the fall because I am starting a new job. I also have a job because I am saving for university and so I can treat myself to clothes and pay for my cell phone etc. I love having a job actually, lol I don't know I like being busy I think.

I would love to work during school time but I have trouble finding a job. I probably could work 20 hours a week during school but I'm not sure which stores will offer flexible hours in case of those big exams.
If possible, do you guys mind naming a few of the stores that you or your friends or siblings work at during the school year that offer flexible hours?
Or would it depend between each store because of the different managers?

^Starbucks is pretty flexible. They require 16 hour availability but during my field hockey season I could only work 10-12 and they easily accommodated that. Plus, 30% off is not too shabby if you frequent Starbucks.

The great thing though is that Starbucks isn't franchised, so each and every store is owned by the one company. The managers are fully equipped to deal with everything, and they are usually very personable and great people. My manager is pretty awesome, so I'm kind of sad that I have to leave soon.

I worked for Starbucks from November until now so I managed my grade 11 year working pretty well.

^ ooo then why are you leaving??

thanks for all your opinions, i got a job and i told them that school is my #1 priority and my manager said that it's fine and they respect that school is more important and that i would only have to work 1 or 2 shifts a week. im not sure what's going to happen for sure, but im going to give it a try and if i cant handle it, then i'll quit.

^^Thanks! I really want to work at Starbucks because there's one really close to my house and school so I won't have to waste money on busfare. But then I probably can't apply until November/December because I'm turning 16 in December.
And usually when you apply (at any store) for Christmas holidays, when would you go hand out your résumé?

Personally, I can manage it. I'm going into 11th grade and I've had a job since last November.
I've been at my current job for almost a year so they're going to start giving me more hours and responsibility.
Last school year when I had a job, I worked usually 2 week days and then Saturday and Sunday. And my weekday hours were usually 4-9,4-930, 5-9, etc.
Now I'm probably gonna start getting 3 or 4 week days and then a weekend day, with hours being from 4-CL (10) and such.
It shouldn't be too much of a problem because I try to get my homework out of the way as soon as possible.

I have to keep 16 hour availability but my schedule for the first five months of the school year only really lets me have Saturdays available. After being so busy, I want to use my weekend to relax, not to work.

I might reapply in the future again though. The job itself sucked but I worked with really, really awesome people.

I got a job in my last year of high school. And to say the least, my grades were completely fucked the entire year.
That's because all I cared about was work, work, work.
I don't know... I completely lost focus in school. I went from being a B+ average student (not too impressive, I know haha) to a C average.

It's good to get a job, but don't work too much. Don't get too caught up in work drama. That's what happened to me. More than anything I was just caught up in work drama.

Haha yes... obsessing over hours, crushing on coworkers, all that jazz.

It kinda felt like high school x2 for me that year.
